Rockhopper Explorations PLC is facing a sizeable diplomatic challenge following Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s growing hostility towards fossil fuels.

The potential development of oil and gas fields in the South Atlantic Ocean around the Falkland Islands will inevitably lead to a further confrontation between the British Overseas Territory and the UK's Labour government especially after Mr. Miliband implemented a ban on all new oil and gas licenses shortly after his appointment.

David Lammy, the Labour Foreign Secretary whose department is responsible for the Falklands, emphasized:

“Action on the climate and nature crisis will be central to everything the Foreign Office does, but as the Falkland Islands have already declined the UK Government’s request to sign the Paris Agreement on climate change, confrontation will follow."
