UK retail sales much stronger than expected

Shoppers were out in force in January with UK retail sales up 2.3% month on month compared to expectations of a 0.8% rise. In December there was a 1.4% fall.

Hopefully this bodes well for us!

Been doing some adhoc DD around town - Elephant/Castle, Hoxton, and Bluewater all busy - baskets full and nice long queues! E/C looking much nicer than it's 99p former self.

Yes the marketer is in marketing hyper drive. The management is certainly creating the spin. Let us hope that it is reflected in the next set of results and we see a meaningful climb in the share price.

I looked in at my local town centre store today. It was reasonably busy, but there were very few people in the much larger 99p store on the opposite side of the road.

They are certainly going for it on new stores.
I would like to see the conclusion of the integration of the 99p stores into the business. There are still a fair number of stores that sit on adjacent sites, and are therefore 'competing' against each other. it is an inefficient use of capital and personnel resource.
