I think I mentioned before that we used to have old-style HSBC Gold Mastercards that came with all sorts of benefits. We had them for decades and I think there were few of us left so the product was eventually withdrawn. I just applied for a new alternative card and received it no questions asked within a few days. Just before Christmas, Mrs J decided she wanted one of her own (joint account previously) and applied. "More information" required on 5 separate occasions, incredibly intrusive, including last 2 years tax returns and a copy of her latest investment portfolio! After latest request for more information, long telephone call to bank elicited the facts that -
*they only count taxable income (i.e. ISA and tax-free income ignored)
*proof that the tax due has been paid (not actually payable until 31/1/25!)
*they don't allow interest as income
*they don't allow income from joint accounts ("we don't know what proportion is yours"!)
*they take no account of the capital (substantial) shown either in her own name or jointly.

We can resolve the problem by making her a 'plus one' on my account but in the modern era of emancipation, WTF should she? She's not a happy bunny.

To cap it all, at the end of prolonged telecon, which I got involved with, the bloke offered his 'sincere apologies' for the way it had been handled and said he would log it as a 'complaint'. 15 minutes later, Mrs J gets pinged with a message saying "We're glad your complaint has been resolved and we are closing this case"!!!!
