23/4/2024 16:17 | In connection with the takeover I referred to recently, I spent a fair chunk of the morning before hitting the gym trying to establish the cost of my holding for CGT purposes. Over 24 years there have been 6 transactions - 2 initial purchases, 2 Rights Issues, a share consolidation and a random amount acquired in an Open Offer. I am borderline OCD so have pretty good records going way back when, but even I struggled. It occurred to me that I doubt many people - particularly those without an accountant - are declaring gains correctly if at all. | jeffian
23/4/2024 15:00 | Dunno gra the telegraph gave 'us' a mention today 'When I was growing up in the late 50s my cohort had a sense of optimism. We believed that we lived in a democracy, that our government, enabled by an impartial civil service, was committed to steadily improving the lot of the citizenry. We believed that our national news media provided an accurate reflection of national and global affairs, that the NHS was a beacon of public service, that the church of England preached a blend of mystical awe and practical God-given common sense, that our armed forces were equipped to defend our country’s interests and that social care was there as a safety net only for the unfortunate in life. We expected that if we worked hard, we would be able to afford a home and sustain a life of quiet comfort and dignity for ourselves and our children. But governments have not delivered what we voted for, and forced upon us policies that we have never had the chance to vote upon. Democracy, it turns out, is a chimera. Either the politicians we assumed to have been in charge were incompetent or liars, or they have not been the ones really pulling the strings. The steady improvements in life that we expected have not materialised. Instead we have a broken NHS, the BBC is a left-wing propaganda machine, housing and social services are overwhelmed by mass immigration, the civil service is pursuing its own 'progressive' agenda, the church is preaching a universalist, pick-and-mix approach, the armed forces are underfunded while the social security system rewards the idleness of millions, there are too few dentists, roads are strewn with potholes, the police are more concerned with hate crimes than burglars and shoplifters, rivers and beaches are polluted with sewage, and we have sky-high tax and energy bills. No wonder people are depressed and angry.' | fireplace22
23/4/2024 14:57 | Rayner will be found wanting, plead it was an honest mistake, take her fines be contrite, resign from the shadow cabinet only to re-appear on the front bench Mandelson style a few months down the line when Labour are in. | fireplace22
23/4/2024 14:30 | #8371, 8373 well, The Daily Telegraph has to concentrate on the important stories such as: Carrie Johnson's duckling Donny dies Boris Johnson told me he wished he was black, claims journalist (I didn't invent either of those, they are verbatim from today's paper) | grahamite2
23/4/2024 14:15 | Arold 3h It's simple (I think). All of Labour know she is guilty, probably of tax evasion, electoral fraud and perhaps benefit fraud. But Starmer can't do anything because Rayner knows the truth about Durham and the pressure that Starmer and Sue Gray put on the Labour PCC to ensure he was not investigated and subsequently charged. If he chops Rayner, she'll spill the beans. And then Starmer has an even bigger problem, as it will show that he lied to the House of Commons. By his own. forensically explained standards, he'll have to resign. | michaelg1
23/4/2024 14:05 | 8371 lol! I note the MSM is falling over itself not to report this. If he’d been found guilty Rishi would be calling for the 6pm podium, no doubt. | barry evans

23/4/2024 10:34 | Totally agree (but I have a soft spot for Margaret Rutherford). | grahamite2
23/4/2024 10:21 | 8362 Hear hear regarding Joan Hickson, absolutely marvelous. | barry evans
23/4/2024 10:20 | #8359, I agree Suchet probably tops it but I used to quite enjoy Peter Ustinov as well. When it comes to Miss Marple, Joan Hickson is the one. | jeffian
23/4/2024 10:17 | #8357 how marvellous! Good find, elpirata. | grahamite2
23/4/2024 10:13 | #8348 deeply sinister and depressing. | grahamite2
23/4/2024 10:08 | #8343 agreed Barry. Suchet took a preposterous, unplayable character and made him credible. Morning all. Oh, while I think of it - John Malkovich was far worse than Branagh! | grahamite2
23/4/2024 10:05 | disgraceful imo that those values have been trashed by the impotent pandering to mass immigration | elpirata
23/4/2024 09:54 | & no buckfast I note | elpirata |
