Had they been allowed to develop fracking sites in the UK 15 years ago when the results and benefits of the technology became commercially proven, would most certainly wouldn't have had the recent energy shock

Sruff1, I do not want that sh!t anywhere near me , the northwest is full of old mines, they tried it near Blackpool caused tremors it will cause untold damage in the mining areas and the water table will be affected, they can go forth and multiply for me, two sides to every quest for cash.

BP investing 2.5 bn p.a for 7 years in the extraction of mainly gas from shales. Will be $ though not £. Our politicians would rather buy gas not sell it and apparently exploiting shales causes huge earthquakes in the UK that for some reason doesnt occur anywhere else. Greta probably knows why and JSO

#Aleman, interesting to read that, we will have to wait and see if a change in Gov effects that decision..

IF you are going to burn coal in your power station anyway it is greener overall to mine your own than ship if in from another country..

Low cost energy security/independence is what powers and empowers a country.. :o)

Yes I think the current discussion on the election is done to death and does not belong here

Scargill:

Entered the dispute with a large union and a small house.
Ended with a small union and a large house.

That's socialism in action.

Care to expand Burbelly? Preferably not a belch mind ;-)

In addition, we will not grant new coal licences and will ban fracking for good.

Selby superpit (near Drax power station) set to reopen?

h ttps://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politics/former-colliery-site-plan-could-generate-thousands-of-jobs-in-yorkshire-4654096

Two decades after the closure of the Selby “superpit̶1; complex a proposal to regenerate the site where the coal was brought to the surface, processed and transported to power stations looks set to be given the go-ahead and could see several thousand people employed there.

don't worry, Labour is launching 'Great British Energy Company' which they claim will lower bills and paid for by windfall tax on Oil&Gas companies. That is they will increase tax on O&G from 75 to 78%. Problem is a) it's not really a company and b) oil majors are shutting down our UK O&G because of high tax

Labour help the spongers not working people. The public will soon find out and then have 5 years to wait to try and vote them out, this is likely to be very difficult if they win the predicted huge majority.

LLB: appreciate that update on Labour's intent.

Energy Security.

That's a laugh. The wind farms out in the seas, particularly the North Sea, are very exposed to hostile action should a war break out. Perhaps the most 'secure' energy source is widely distributed small modular reactors (as discussed at length on the Rolls Royce thread).

#MC1 - Labour manifesto 2024

We will not issue new licences to explore new fields because they will not take a penny off bills, cannot make us energy secure, and will only accelerate the worsening climate crisis. In addition, we will not grant new coal licences and will ban fracking for good.

Perhaps our cheapest energy would come from shale fracking. There's an abundance of the stuff up here in the north. Bowland area.

It would tick the levelling up aims and is cleaner than oil. The extraction being undertaken now in the US has missively helped them and they are shipping it over to the UK is considerable quantities. Not exactly green on a planetary level is it?

And certainly doesn't help the north of England as much of the LNG is landed in the south of the UK for processing/storage.

The Labout manifesto is 1 thing, wait until the 1st budget to get to the truth of what they want to inflict on the country, financially illiterate hard left back benchers that will be constantly banging the drum about taxing the successful to give to the unsuccessful to level up..

Furthermore WTF is a 'proper' windfall tax on OnG companies supposed to be, they are taxed at 75% already through to 2029..

Cheap energy is where manufacturing growth will come from, just look at the basket case Germany has turned into without their cheap Nordstream1/2 gas and no Nuclear..

Grrrrr.. :o)

The Reform manifesto is far more appealing, the blues will be looking for yet another leader after they get wiped out on 04th July..

MC I'm well over 70 but my memory is solid and set against a Labour resurgence that could be in place for the years I have left.

Thought it was about time I posted with direct relevance to PHNX ;-)

Looking back at my SIPP that I created in March 2023 when I moved from Std. Life. and I have bought just under £30,000 worth in five blocks. This between 21 March 2023 and 28 August 2023.

These are worth £30,017 as I type this. I have received £3,201 in dividends since first investing and all these have been reinvested.

Given the lamantable state of the market generally, and in particular, the state of insurers/investment/pension providers I consider this to be far from poor.

I have, in effect, purchased an annuity with benefits. I get the capital outlay should I need to liquidate quickly.

And, yump, I have an equally instructive wife.

Not sure all supposed Labour supporters are quite as socialist as they’d like to be seen. We know some rampant Labour supporting professors who go and wave anti O&G placards. Both of them make multiple fights overseas to have frequent academic meetings, in their “pointless degree” subjects.

I bet they’d get on the case of businesses that don’t make positive ESG progress. Do the universities ?

Wifey has warned me not to cause trouble whenever we see them ;-) But its hard not to, given that its “ok” for them to make dogmatic and hypocritical comments, as they are “nice” people.

So have I gbh2.
Blair (1997-2007) and Brown (2007-2010) were fortunate in that apart from the possible Millenium bug (oh, and the Middle East wars etc) nothing desperate took place in economic terms.

You need to go back to James Callaghan (1976-1979) and Wilson (1974-1976) to have experienced a troubled finance/economy period.

You'd therefore need to be older than 60 to have personally experienced such an economy.

I have a friend (well, more my kid's friend) who is 50. He owns about 20 houses that he rents long-term and is probably worth over a million. He's an ardent Labour supporter and a remainer - to an extent that he can no longer discuss such issues with his older family.

I think he will get one serious shock when he experiences for the first real time a Labour government.

But it will be too late by then.
