There was probably some forced selling yesterday, as some funds do track certain indexes e.g. FTSE 250. Also, margin requirements are getting tightened up as credit contracts worldwide, so anyone trading on credit is risking getting a margin call as brokers tighten up on credit.

@ Hood:
I asked HL. Here is the answer

Due to the ongoing events in Russia and possible restrictions on the settlement of stock trades, we are currently unable to trade Russian GDRs (Global Depositary Receipts).

This will trade on the London Stock Exchange, the rest is just ways to categorise groups of stocks traded on the LSE.

Spacedust. POG has been deleted from an index, not the LSE shares market. It will still trade on LSE as before, just won't be included in the calculations for the index.

The Russel index is just a separate valuation of shares. They include most but not all shares which are listed on lse.

Thanks hood. But where will they be traded? Aim? Not a single mention of where they will go after deletion from russel???????

The firms will be deleted from all FTSE Russell indices “in conjunction with the forthcoming March 2022 index reviews, at zero value.” This change will be effective from the open on 21 March 2022.

The subsidiary had already announced that it would drop Russian bonds from its fixed-income indexes.

This came after reports of a “complete inability for international investors to repatriate bond proceeds in ruble and non-ruble denominated assets” from the Russian government and bond issuers.

Relax. Nothing changes - can still buy and sell. They just don't get included in the indices value.

SD, they get removed from the indices but not delisted (as some are claiming). You will still be able to trade them.
