This announcement was described as "significant news" and was first thing on the agenda of the Alaska State Senate committee meeting on energy yesterday.
It is significant for Chugach and Harvest et al because they have first moved advantage on the supply of (LNG) imported gas into Alaska.
It is important for Pantheon and the AGDC because they will have no contracts to sell gas to local energy companies in Alaska and will make funding for the $11 billion gas pipeline difficult to sign.
It is important for Pantheon because it will mean no GSPA as there will be no market in Alaska for their gas.
And no funding based on gas contracts they might have had.

Imports via converted exported terminal or an fsru,what matters is what is best for Alaska and as has been pointed out and always ignored by helpful,is that a pipeline allows for a fixed price for gas supplied by pantheon versus a future of imported lng with unknown global supply market prices for the decades to come.
Clearly the independent report by woodmac favoured the pipeline.
I am honest enough to say I don’t know which way the state will go,but you won’t see that type of honesty from helpful.
But with the president of the usa as well as the governor of the state of Alaska publicly supporting a pipeline,it is surely reasonable to think that the pipeline option has to be taken very seriously. |

Harvest Alaska, an affiliate of Hilcorp Alaska, announced Thursday that it is proposing to acquire and convert a shuttered natural gas export facility in Nikiski to start receiving imported gas.
The imported gas could start being received at the Kenai Peninsula facility as early as 2026, according to Harvest Alaska.
Chugach Electric Association — the state’s largest electric utility — said it is in talks for the potential purchase of imported gas from the Nikiski plant.
Southcentral Alaska utilities and cities are scrambling to plan for an anticipated shortfall of gas from Cook Inlet, which has supplied the region for decades. Railbelt utilities have gas contracts with Hilcorp expiring over the next few years, and Hilcorp, the region’s largest gas producer, has warned it cannot meet upcoming demand beyond those contracts based on production from the Inlet.
Last year, Chugach Electric warned that imported gas could see power prices rise by roughly 10%.
Under the proposal announced Thursday, the other four Railbelt utilities could secure gas supplies from the Nikiski plant.
The Nikiski LNG plant operated for over 40 years and was mothballed in 2011.
Marathon Petroleum acquired the plant from ConocoPhillips Alaska in 2018, and then announced plans to convert the facility for exports.
Enstar — Southcentral Alaska’s natural gas utility — last month announced its own plans to construct an imported gas facility. The utility told state regulators earlier in the week that it had signed an exclusivity agreement with Glenfarne — a New-York based company — to advance those plans.

Imported LNG is necessary.
It matches up to any such gas from a $44 billion Alaska pipeline.
It gets first mover status.
And will compete with any pipeline, making the pipeline gas more uneconomic.
There's not a big enough market in Alaska for imported LNG and gas pipeline gas and Cook Inlet gas.
