Venice, Italy, is situated upon 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges.

With tide waters expected to rise to perilous levels in the coming decades, the city has constructed 78 giant steel gates

across the three inlets through which water from the Adriatic could surge into Venice’s lagoon.

The panels — which weigh 300 tons and are 92ft wide and 65ft high — are fixed to massive concrete bases dug into the seabed.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world, handling upwards of 100 million passengers in 2019.

Hundreds of flights in and out of Beijing have been suspended in recent days due to a rise in new COVID-19 cases in the Chinese capital city.

As of this morning, more than 1,200 flights have been cancelled at the city’s Capital and Daxing Airports, with many more expected to follow.

After nearly two months with no new infections, Beijing has reported several dozen cases in the past week — its largest spike since February.

Officials have traced the outbreak to the Xinfadi Market (shown in second image), the largest wholesale food market in Asia.

With vendors spread across 300 acres (121 hectares), Xinfadi is responsible for the sale of 70% of Beijing’s fresh vegetables,

more than 80% of its fresh food and drinks, and all of its imported fruit.

The Great Blue Hole is a marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize.

Now a popular destination for divers, the site is located near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll about 43 miles (70 km)

from Belize City. The hole — measuring 1,043 feet (318 m) across and 407 feet (124m) deep — was formed during several episodes of

glaciation between 153,000 and 15,000 years ago, when sea levels were much lower.

Three massive Singapore Airlines A380s (seen at top) are currently being stored with other aircraft at Alice Springs Airport,

in Australia’s Northern Territory. As the world’s largest passenger airliner, these planes weigh 580 tons and typically carry 525 passengers

(even though they are certified to carry as many as 853 people).

In total, the airline has grounded 138 out of its 147 aircraft worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A stone tablet in Aneyoshi, Japan, warns residents not to build homes below it.

Hundreds of these so-called tsunami stones, some more than six centuries old, dot the coast of Japan.

Residents say this injunction from their ancestors kept their tiny village of 11 households safely out of reach of the deadly tsunami

last month that wiped out hundreds of miles of Japanese coast and rose to record heights near here.

The waves stopped just 300 feet below the stone.

Hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy. Difficult times to get through, but we will get there. I keep looking at Commscope but haven't got on board yet. Still waiting for a refund from 2 cancelled cruises that should have sailed during April and May. The next decision is whether to keep the refunds or invest them.

Thousands of rental vehicles are currently parked at Angel and Dodger stadiums in the Los Angeles, California metro area.

With so few people traveling and renting cars during the coronavirus pandemic, rental car companies have resorted to using large-scale

public venues as overflow parking for unused vehicles.

Some major rental companies have filed for bankruptcy and almost all are beginning to sell cars

at discounted prices to downsize their fleets and recoup financial losses.
