Electric wires stretch across bright red salt ponds in San Francisco Bay, California. Here, sea water is channelled into large ponds and exits through natural evaporation, leaving the salt behind to be collected. The massive ponds get their vibrant reddish colors from the algae that thrive in the extremely salty water.

Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, China was built over a 10 day period between January 23 and February 2. With more than 7,000 people working around the clock, the facility was a major step in the Chinese government’s response to slow the spread of COVID-19. The facility has 1,000 beds with 30 intensive care units, medical equipment rooms, and quarantine wards. Field hospitals like this one are one of the ways China has slowed the spread of the virus. As of today, China has reported a second consecutive day of no new confirmed cases in Hubei province, the epicenter of the pandemic.

Cologne is the fourth most populous city in Germany, with just over a million inhabitants. Situated on the Rhine River, the city is known for its Cologne Cathedral and numerous institutions of higher education, including the University of Cologne — one of Europe’s oldest and largest universities. Green areas cover more than a quarter of Cologne, which equates to roughly 800 square feet (75 square meters) of public green space per inhabitant.

Waves roll into the northern shore of Dakar, the capital and largest city of Senegal. Roughly 1 million people live in the city proper and another 1.4 million inhabit its greater metropolitan area. Situated on the Cap-Vert (Cape Verde) Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean, Dakar is the westernmost city on the African mainland.

Tulips fields bloom in Lisse, Netherlands. The Dutch produce a total of 4.3 billion tulip bulbs each year. 53% of the total harvest (2.3 billion) is grown into cut flowers. Of these, 1.3 billion are sold in the Netherlands as cut flowers and the remainder is exported: 630 million bulbs to Europe and 370 million elsewhere.

Iōjima — not to be confused with Iwo Jima — is an island located 59 miles (110 km) south of Kagoshima, Japan. Iōjima experiences frequent volcanic activity, which results in massive amounts of sulfur dioxide flowing into the sea. This causes the surrounding waters to turn yellow, green, and teal as seen here. The island has a total area of 4.5 miles (11.65 sq km) and a population of 142 people.

The Marree Man, also known as Stuart’s Giant, is a modern geoglyph atop a plateau at Finnis Springs, 37 miles (60 km) west of Marree, South Australia. It depicts an indigenous Australian man hunting with a boomerang or stick and is 1.7 miles (2.7 km) tall with a perimeter of 17 miles (28 km). Although it is one of the largest geoglyphs in the world, its origin remains a mystery, with no one claiming responsibility for its creation.

The Nossa Senhora da Graça Fort is an eighteenth century fort in the village of Alcáçova, Portugal. Its prominent position atop Monte da Graça (Hill of Grace) made it an important stronghold during the Seven Years’ War, War of the Oranges and the Peninsular War. The fort is part of the Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Waste ponds can be seen at the Athabasca oil sands in Canada. The area contains the largest known deposits of bitumen on Earth. Bitumen is a semi-solid form of crude oil that naturally occurs as a mixture of sand, clay, and water. The additional energy required to mine and then remove the sand from the bitumen leads to the release of more carbon emissions than in any other form of oil production. Extraction takes place by injecting hot water into deep wells so the sands liquefy and can be pumped up to the surface. This waste pond is roughly four square miles (10 square kilometers).

A football (soccer) pitch is nestled along the waterfront of Križna Luka, a neighborhood on the Croatian island of Hvar. Located in the Adriatic Sea, Hvar is about 115 square miles (298 square km) in size and has slightly more than 11,000 residents. The pitch shown in this Overview is the home ground for the NK Hvar football club and has the capacity to seat 1,000 fans.

The plaza outside of Duomo di Milano, the largest cathedral in Milan, Italy, can be seen nearly empty last week (March 4) during a nationwide lockdown in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. As a means of limiting the number of cases, health organizations have recommended taking preventative measures such as limiting public gatherings until more data can be gathered about the spread of the virus.

We’ll do our best to continue to provide big picture perspectives during this time. Please take your health and the health of those around you seriously - wash your hands and employ social distancing as much as possible. Be safe!

Happy Pi Day! There are many circular sights to see from the Overview perspective, including the Nardò Ring — a high speed, 7.8-mile-long (12.5 km) test track in Nardò, Italy. Each of the ring’s four lanes has a determined “neutral speed” and is banked in such a manner that one can drive as if the road were straight. In fact, a driver in the outer most lane doesn’t need to turn the wheel while driving at speeds of up to 149 mph (240 km/h).

Midden-Zeeland is the central peninsula of Zeeland, the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. Located at the mouth of several major rivers — including the Scheldt, Rhine and Meuse — Zeeland has more than 21,000 acres (8,550 hectares) of arable farmland and at least 3,100 farms. Popular crops grown in this region include onions, potatoes, grain legumes, sugar beets, and flax.

Cars and trucks sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic along the EDSA Highway in Manila, Philippines. Manila is recognized as the densest city in the world and also has some of the worst traffic on the planet. In addition to its large population, the city lacks quality infrastructure or additional modes of reliable transport. Furthermore, laws that have been implemented to limit the number of cars on the road or to mitigate the city’s poor urban design are rarely followed. In total, 71% of the air pollution in the Philippines comes from automobiles and the dirty air that they produce has been considered a life-threatening problem to Manila’s 12 million residents.

Marsamxett Harbor is a natural harbor on the east coast of the island of Malta. The harbor is mostly used for leisure activities and has the greatest number of yacht berthing options available on the island. At its center is Manoel Island, home to an eighteenth century star fort, Fort Manoel.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is located on Lac de Gras lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada, 120 miles (193 km) south of the Arctic Circle. The mine produces approximately 7.5 million carats of diamonds each year. In standard weight, that’s an annual output of 3,300 pounds (1,500 kg). In this Overview, the most distinguishable areas of the facility are its two primary open pits, waste ponds, processing facilities, and an airstrip capable of landing aircraft as large as 737s and C-130s.

Brightly-colored roofs are seen here in Khlong Sam, a tambon located in the Pathum Thani Province of central Thailand. Many buildings in Thailand have ceramic tile roofs, painted in lighter shades to reflect sunlight and keep indoor areas cooler. These buildings, all constructed within the past 20 years, were likely painted in a uniform color that varied depending on the time they were built

“Rethinking Nuclear Power”

The Arlit Uranium Mine supplies the raw material for much of France’s nuclear power generation. France generates 75% of its electricity from nuclear, yet usage across the rest of the world has been falling over the last 20 years. Nuclear power generation produces zero carbon emissions and provides highly efficient and reliable energy to the grid. Yet, it is not without its risks. As worldwide energy use is projected to increase 50% in the next 30 years, the future of nuclear could help meet that demand.

The large, circular earth work seen here is part of a major redevelopment project in Taparura, a district on the northern coast of Sfax, Tunisia. The project plans to restore the city’s beaches and create more than 1,000 acres (420 hectares) of land to accommodate new housing, hotels, recreational areas, green spaces and public facilities for about 50,000 residents. Taparura draws its name from the Roman Taparura, a fifth century town that Sfax was founded atop of in AD 849.

Waste ponds are seen at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station near Tonopah, Arizona. As the most powerful nuclear power plant in the United States, the facility produces an average of 3.3 gigawatts, or enough power to serve roughly 4 million people. Additionally, since it is the only major nuclear power plant that is not located near a large body of water, this facility evaporates water from the treated sewage of several nearby cities to provide cooling for the steam that it produces.

Glacial melting and flooding occurs every year by the Skafta River in Iceland. As the water travels down towards the North Atlantic Ocean, incredible patterns are created on the hillsides. Rising lava, steam vents, or newly opened hot springs can all cause this rapid ice melt, leading to a sizable release of water that picks up sediment as it flows down from the glaciers.

Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone formation in the Northern Territory of Australia. The monolith — rising to a height of 2,831 feet (863 m) with a perimeter of 5.8 miles (9.4 km) — is a sacred site to the Aboriginal people who settled there 10,000 years ago. While the first Australian tourists arrived at Uluru in 1936, annual visitor numbers rose to more than 400,000 by the year 2000. Increased tourism at the site provides regional and national economic benefits, but also creates an ongoing challenge to balance conservation, cultural values, and visitor needs.

FWIW I've just sold out of CommScope. I don't like the way coronavirus is spreading, so taking some money off the table - and given Comm identified they already were expecting a supply chain issue in 1Q it seemed like a natural one to include. Taking a fair old hit on it (41%) which reduces the gains on Pace & Arris, but I may be back when the dust settles. I still like the underlying story.

Did you notice the writedown on Arris goodwill, Alex? Looks like Arris did well to sell when they did, although highlighting "the loss of key leaders following the acquisition" is a pretty damning indictment of the integration process, isn't it?

"GAAP net loss available to common stockholders was $(450.5) million for the fourth quarter of 2019, driven by $376.1 million of goodwill impairment charges related to our ARRIS reporting units as a result of our annual goodwill impairment test. Since the closing of the acquisition of ARRIS, these reporting units have experienced challenges that impacted our performance, including declines in spending by cable operator customers that resulted in declines in net sales and operating income and the loss of key leaders following the acquisition. We initially anticipated a recovery in spending by certain customers starting in 2020; however, during our annual strategic planning process in the fourth quarter, a number of specific factors arose, including an assessment of historical and future operating results, key customer inputs, new assessments of market trends and anticipated expenditures required to support the changing market dynamics affecting each of the reporting units. As a result of these factors, we expect a more prolonged recovery and we concluded that the fair value of each of the ARRIS reporting units was less than its carrying value, resulting in the goodwill impairment charges. Goodwill impairment charges are excluded from non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA."
