Have we lost out again :

- Agreement Will Provide Deutsche Telekom Customers With a Platform for a
Range of Special-Interest Channels and Compelling TV Services

Deutsche Telekom AG has reached agreement with Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:
MSFT) on an alliance to deliver Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services
to consumers across Germany. The contract will enable Deutsche Telekom Group
to deliver next-generation television, as well as complementary interactive
services and a range of entertainment products over its VDSL broadband
networks. Deutsche Telekom will use the Microsoft TV(R) IPTV Edition software
platform to offer these services. Microsoft will support Deutsche Telekom
with joint marketing, in addition to marketing by Deutsche Telekom, to help
develop IPTV in Germany. The agreement reached with Deutsche Telekom is
Microsoft's largest IPTV contract in Europe to date and its second largest
worldwide.

(Logo: )

The platform will enable customers to receive regular TV programmes as
well as advanced television services including standard- and high-definition
programmes, interactive TV, digital video recording and video on demand. An
onDemand Collections feature will allow viewers to access appealing content
packages including selected feature films, TV series or documentaries at the
touch of a button.

IPTV services will be delivered through the new VDSL network, which is
currently being extended by T-Com. This network is expected to permit
bandwidth of up to 50 Mbit/s and is planned for launch starting mid-2006 in
ten major German cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.

"In recent months, the experts at T-Online have run the Microsoft TV
platform through extensive tests, and we are convinced that we will be able
to offer excellent-quality IPTV services that will expand as we need them
to," said Kai-Uwe Ricke, chairman of the Board of Management for Deutsche
Telekom AG. "IPTV delivered via VDSL will enable better, more
service-oriented, more interactive and, above all, more customised
television. With this advanced television service, Deutsche Telekom and
Microsoft are writing another chapter in our long-standing cooperation,
tapping new markets and together exploring exciting new growth
opportunities."

The Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software platform will enable Deutsche
Telekom to offer its customers a better television experience, including a
wide range of special-interest channels and compelling pay-TV programmes,
both live and on demand. Integrated personal video recorder functionality
will enable viewers to "time shift" programmes at their convenience, pausing
live shows or recording them to enjoy later.

The Microsoft TV IPTV Edition platform will also enable viewers to
interact with television programmes. Unlike many broadcast interactive TV
services available today, interactive TV on IPTV leverages the
always-connected, two-way, broadband network to deliver richer interactive TV
capabilities. This could include applications such as voting, accessing
sports scores and league tables, and participating in competitions to win
prizes.

"Today's announcement represents Microsoft's largest IPTV agreement in
Europe to date and is a very significant milestone in our long-standing
relationship with Deutsche Telekom," said Steve Ballmer, chief executive
officer of Microsoft. "Working together, Microsoft and Deutsche Telekom will
help create a revolution in TV entertainment for consumers across Germany.
With its rapidly growing customer base, and the power of next-generation
technologies like IPTV, Deutsche Telekom has the potential to deliver
exciting new connected-entertainment services across the range of consumer
devices in the home."

Lucent is betting on the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) as the 'glue' to integrate the disparate elements of an IPTV system, and thus tying network-based IMS resources together with IPTV middleware. Its chosen middleware partner is Orca Interactive and the latest platform integrates Bell Labs developed network and applications elements with the Orca software. According to Marcus Weldon, a member of the technical staff at Bell Labs, the platform will leverage the IP Layer 3 functionality of Lucent's Stinger DSL gear. "IPTV calls for new hardware developments. It's not as easy as people imagine – it's not just a DSLAM. We need gear with extra packet processing capabilities – especially for real time streaming," he says.

nice to get a piece of this;

Early adopters switch on to IPTV
by Guy Daniels - 14/3/2006 13:37:29

Forward this story to a colleague

A new survey suggests that the most tech-savvy electronics consumers in the US are beginning to consider switching over to IPTV as a viable option to today's cable and satellite offerings. The survey, sponsored by Siemens Communications and conducted by market research firm In-Stat, found that 18 per cent of early adopters, who now subscribe to cable or satellite television, said they "probably" or "definitely" would switch to get IPTV television services from their telephone company provider. But if given a 10 per cent savings offering on an IPTV package, an additional 34 per cent of the remaining non-committed early adopters said they "probably" or "definitely" would switch.

"IPTV has a number of advanced features that will eventually move into the mainstream over the next decade as users get more experience with the services," said Chris Coles of Siemens Communications. "But initially, IPTV subscribers will need assurances that telephone companies and other broadband operators can deliver baseline digital television and communications services - things like pay-per-view and video on demand - that they now expect. Then they'll be ready to let IPTV turn their televisions into more advanced home command, control and communication centres."

The most popular services that early adopters said they are most willing to pay extra for included Time-shifted TV, Video Telephony/Chat, Video Home Surveillance and Gaming. For each additional service, the majority of respondents who said they are willing to pay extra said they would pay up to $7.50 each month.

The early adopters surveyed indicated that some of the IPTV services they are interested in should perhaps be made part of IPTV packages without extra fees. Such services could include Caller ID on TV (69 per cent expressed interest), Interactive Information (63 per cent), Call Logging (58 per cent), and Remote Programming (57 per cent).

"Interest is likely to grow for other advanced IPTV applications as people get more experience using the services and understanding the benefits," said Michelle Abraham, principal analyst with In-Stat. "Portable entertainment applications, for example, are likely to attract more attention as mobile and fixed networks become more integrated and consumers get more first-hand experience taking content on-the-go and viewing it later with a PDA, mobile phone or laptop computer."

Worldwide IPTV service revenue is expected to exceed $44 billion in 2009, according to Infonetics Research. Global IPTV subscribers are projected to top 53 million in 2009.

Meanwhile, a new report from Strategy Analytics suggests that the new deadline requiring conversion from analogue to digital TV broadcasting in the US market will be a windfall for pay TV providers. The report predicts that the February 2009 switch-off date will spur millions of households served only by free-to-air analogue broadcasts to finally sign up for multichannel service from cable, satellite and telecom companies. Additionally, the report forecasts that the number of US households using some form of digital TV will grow from 57 million today to 77 million by the end of 2008, just two months before the new deadline.

The deadline will also boost adoption of satellite and telco-delivered TV, but not on the same scale as cable, which will draw upon its huge base of analogue customers. To maximize this opportunity, cable's strategy and pricing structure for digital cable should target customers who have not previously used pay TV. This means digital service pricing at much lower rates than those available today, as well as bundled service package offerings of TV, broadband Internet access and Internet telephony.

Another that hopefully comes ORCAs way?

My guess is that it is Deutsche Telecom, I did hear rumours last year that they had signed up with ORCA and maybe that was the deal that did not come through last year that caused the results to fall so short?

It does follow with ECI as the supplier of the VDSL2 network and one of the world's biggest telcom companies? Any bthoughts?

And ECI middleware partners?

Mergers & Acquisition is a Growing Trend

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- MRG's new IPTV Market Leader Report March 2006 ranks about 60 different IPTV vendors in four different regional markets and globally, grouped into six different IPTV product categories. By using a new ranking system, the report gives a separate regional ranking to each company by product category, based on actual numbers of subscribers and video channels supported by that company's product(s). The report also provides an instant snapshot of the top 30 IPTV vendors, including a quick assessment about each company's growth prospects in the next two years. High-level findings include:

Ranked first globally for the Access Systems product category is NEC, with ECI ranking second. Tut ranks first globally and in North America in IPTV Video Headends (based on channels served), while SkyStream ranks second (globally). In Video On Demand servers, entone ranks first globally and Alcatel ranks second. Motorola ranks first in Set-top Boxes globally as well as in North America and Europe due to its recent acquisition of Kreatel, with Yuxing ranking second. Over 23 Set-top Box vendors are ranked. In Middleware, Thomson/Thales ranks first globally, and Orca ranks second. In IP TV Content Protection systems, Viaccess is first globally, and Widevine is second.

The report is based on a database of 370 service providers globally providing over 46 thousand video channels in Europe, Asia, North America, and Rest of World.
