Atlas Interactive & ZTE (...& Orca) hope have a 500,000-subscriber IPTV base within two years:-

Thursday, June 16, 2005

SINGAPORE: With the government of India working towards creating a feasible atmosphere in the connectivity space, Chinese telecom majors like ZTE or Huawei are eyeing India to deploy IPTV solutions and services.

The companies are showcasing their latest product offerings in this space at the ongoing CommunicAsia 2005 in Singapore. While telecom remains the core focus for Chinese companies like ZTE Corporation and UTStarcomm, it is the tremendous growth potential of applications like IPTV that is attracting them towards the segment in an aggressive way.

With an aim to entrench itself in the IPTV space, China's ZTE has already signed an agreement with Altas Interactive in December last year. According to the agreement, ZTE is going to provide IPTV services to 60,000 Atlas subscribers based in four major cities.

"This is just the beginning for us. The project involves supplying and commissioning services like TVoIP for a range of triple play (Voice, Video, data) segments," informed Bin Bao, NGN Product manager, Director Engineer, marketing department at ZTE.

Bullish on the growth potential of IPTV, the partnership is targeting to achieve 500,000-subscriber base in India covering more than 32 cities in the next two years.

Replicating China's model?

At a time when most of the telecom players are busy rolling out new networks and aligning themselves towards the changing market needs, applications like IPTV are going to provide the much needed growth - when it comes to targeting newer revenue streams.

"Today's telecom service providers are looking out for more revenue streams. IPTV can be their piggy bank if they plan well. Indian market is huge and we have all the applications needed to target this segment," explained UTStarcomm Telecom Media Switch engineer manager Richard Sun.

With IPTV on a roll, applications like TV on demand, video on demand content streaming, content distribution and even collaborative gaming can be a possibility. "There was a time when Chinese operators were looking for applications to generate more revenue. That's when they seriously ventured into areas like IPTV. Though there are no numbers available, but the market has grown ten times in China in the recent past," Sun added.

India and China are countries with different cultures but both the regions have a large population base. With the government of India opening up its key sectors like telecom, in the recent past there has been an upsurge in the number of Chinese telecom players testing Indian waters.

Scalable Orca

CHICAGO – Supercomm 2005 – Sensing that IPTV deployments may be hitting some rough patches, Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU - message board) is putting together a set of products and a strategy for entering the video-over-broadband market.

On Tuesday Lucent announced a partnership with Orca Interactive Ltd., a supplier of video middleware and integration tools that has some deals in Europe and Asia (see Lucent, Orca Team on IPTV, IPTV Tidbits: Microsoft, China & More, and Ericsson Provides TDC With IMS). Lucent says it's integrated Orca's RIGHTv platform and will use technologies such as IP Multimedia Subystem (IMS) to add other applications to video in a carrier's suite of broadband services.

The partnerships represents a new phase of IPTV operations for Lucent, which suffered a big defeat when it lost the integration contract for IPTV at SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC - message board) to Alcatel (NYSE: ALA - message board; Paris: CGEP:PA).

With some rumblings that IPTV deployments might not be going as smoothly as planned, it's clear that Lucent is using that as an opportunity to rebuild its IPTV strategy (see SBC, Microsoft Defend Lightspeed).

"The reason we chose Orca is that the solution is scaleable," says Rob Piconi, vice president and general manager of Lucent's broadband solutions group. "A lot of the delays in IPTV are being caused by scaleability issues."

Piconi also said another consideration with Orca was that its software platform is open and includes development APIs. Lucent would like to work with its customers to develop more sophisticated applications, using IMS, such as video conferencing.

Of course, Lucent's not the only one going after the IP video market, as the slew of IP video market news announcements here point to IPTV has one of the hottest areas (see Juniper Aims E-Series at IPTV, Spirent Latest to Tackle Video Test, and IBM Scopes Out IPTV Party). In terms of IPTV middleware and integration, however, the early dominance by Alcatel and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - message board) is going to be difficult to overcome.

"Alcatel and Microsoft have got the big telephone companies nailed down," says Kermit Ross, principal with Millenium Marketing. "There might be scaleability issues, but Microsoft and SBC have an army of people working on it. Lucent's got no IPTV customers, and in broadband they only have a few."

Lucent says it's in IPTV trials with a "global Tier 1 player," though it's not revealing who that is.

It's clear that Lucent hopes to use its installed base of optical switching, Sonet multiservice, and DSL access equipment to get into the IPTV business. For example, Lucent executives point to a recent IPTV service at one of its DSL customers, Telefónica SA, which is supplying service to 40,000 subscribers. The system is being run in conjunction with Lucent's Stinger DSL platform, but Telefónica has built its own video middleware.

Because the North American market is perceived by some to be locked up, with SBC, BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS - message board), and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ - message board) all going with Alcatel and Microsoft, Lucent may be focusing initially on the European market. Piconi says delivering IPTV in Europe will be quicker than in the United States, because HDTV, which requires more bandwidth, is not a factor there.

IBM stirs...

JUNE 07, 2005

CHICAGO – Supercomm 2005 – Having been active on the fringes of the emerging telco TV sector, IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM - message board) has unveiled a full-blown IPTV strategy that couples its IT infrastructure with an impressive menu of telco TV point solution partners.

IBM's message to the telecom operator world is this: We've got the IT systems and integration smarts you need to put video and TV services on your network. IBM says it's lining up a bundle of specialist partners, from the video headend to the set-top box, with proven video system capabilities and deployment experience.

"Primarily, we can help carriers develop their IPTV business model and create a service delivery platform, supply the relevant systems, and provide integration and support services," says Shelley Sackett, global marketing manager for IBM's digital media group.

That's quite an advance on the company's previous IPTV involvement, which has centered around a few triple-play partnerships (see IBM, Orca Partner on IPTV).

IBM says it has already built a position in the sector as an IPTV integration partner to China Netcom Corp. Ltd. (NYSE: CN - message board; Hong Kong: 0906) and BCE Inc. (NYSE/Toronto: BCE - message board), better known as Bell Canada (see China Shapes Up for IPTV Boom).

So is IBM is ready to butt heads with telco TV heavyweights Alcatel (NYSE: ALA - message board; Paris: CGEP:PA) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - message board)? It may be ready to compete with these companies on the integration and software front. Alcatel and Microsoft have been winning the major carrier deals lately (see Alcatel & Microsoft Going Steady, SBC Awards Microsoft $400M IPTV Deal , and Mais Alors! Alcatel Bags $1.7B SBC Deal ).

But in many cases, IBM could serve as just another, complementary supplier to the massive telecom networks being built for IPTV. A spokeswoman says IBM is performing a lot of the integration work for Alcatel at SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC - message board), where Alcatel is the IPTV outsourcer. If that's the case, then the outsourcer has outsourced the outsourcing work!

So what is IBM offering carriers? Here's a rundown:

IBM hardware and software components, including the eServer xSeries and eServer BladeCenter, TotalStorage DS4000 disk storage, the Websphere Web portal server, and the WebSphere Telecommunications Application Server for a carrier's service delivery platform (SDP)

Integration and business service support from IBM Global Services, including the creation and design of an SDP, content management consulting, customer premises equipment design and support, and business model and service system testing services and support

Video servers from the likes of Arroyo Video Solutions Inc., Entone Technologies Inc., and Kasenna Inc.

IPTV middleware from Microsoft, Myrio Corp. (now part of Siemens Communications Group), Orca Interactive Ltd., and French group Thales SA (Paris: TCFP.PA)

Head-end encoding equipment from Envivio Inc., Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT - message board), Scientific-Atlanta Inc. (NYSE: SFA - message board), and Tandberg Television

Set-top box technology from multiple suppliers, including Entone, Scientific-Atlanta, Amino Technologies plc, Kreatel Communications AB, and Thomson (NYSE: TMS - message board; Euronext Paris: 18453).

Any ideas how many customer BT will have say at end of 2006 for this service (even if it may not be ORCA). Interesting how this will affect the cable companies and bskyb in the long run. So far I don't think home choice has been the success people

Lucent Technologies IP Video Solution at the Heart of Telefonica's 'Imagenio' Broadband Service
Lucent Technologies IP DSLAM Together With RiverStone Ethernet Routers Contribute to Imagenio Success

CHICAGO and MURRAY HILL, N.J. /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Telefonica de Espana S.A.U ("Telefonica") of Spain and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced that Telefonica has added its 40,000th IPTV subscriber to Telefonica's "Imagenio" multimedia broadband service in Spain. "Imagenio" is designed to deliver digital-quality broadcast multimedia services into the home over a broadband connection, also serving as the platform for Telefonica's future multimedia service offerings.

Lucent and Telefonica have already deployed more than 100,000 IPTV ports of Lucent's Stinger® DSL broadband access concentrator. Lucent's ports are video ready and currently serve more than 40 broadcast video channels that offer the most popular audio and video channels, data services and digital-quality video-on-demand services that "Imagenio" currently offers.

"The entire Lucent team worked very closely with us to develop a leading IPTV solution and we are very proud of how well it has been received by our customers," said Vicente San Miguel, CTO, Telefonica. "Imagenio was built using innovative network elements and architecture, and proves that we can deliver the multimedia services that our customers demand."

"Lucent is a leader in delivering IP Video and we're happy to support Telefonica to help it provide this exciting new service to its subscribers," said Rob Piconi, vice president and general manager, Broadband Solutions, Lucent Technologies. "Imagenio is the flagship IPTV offer in Spain. Its number of users keeps growing fast, and with the capabilities of Lucent and Riverstone's broadband solution, Telefonica subscribers can get faster access and a more diverse service offer."

Lucent's IP Video Solution enables service providers to deliver a triple play bundle of Voice, Video and Data services to their subscribers on a mass-market scale. Central to Lucent's IP video solution is the Stinger(r) DSL platform, the industry's first high performance IP-enabled DSLAM with advanced Layer 3 IP features that support robust, reliable delivery of IPTV in a wide variety of deployment scenarios and network architectures. With multi-gigabit Ethernet enhancements and high port density, it enables service providers to manage more subscribers in less space while leveraging their embedded ATM infrastructure to cost-effectively provide IP services, including video. This, coupled with Riverstone's reliable Carrier Ethernet routing technology, provides carriers with a highly efficient and cost effective network, allowing service providers to compete more effectively.

Lucent has already installed Stinger® access concentrators in more than 25 countries. The Stinger® DSL platform supports the "triple-play" of DSL services, combining data, video and voice, enabling service providers to offer revenue generating services to their subscribers. The Lucent Stinger® platform is built to handle the requirements of next-generation, high-performance services over DSL, and provides enhanced IP and ATM performance, offering the bandwidth needed to support increased subscriber densities. Lucent pays Orca 'millions' for licences..

To be installed with which Lucent customer...?

As we will recall, Lucent was named the prime contractor for the BT 21CN

'In addition, Lucent's Worldwide Services and Bell Labs divisions will provide "network planning, integration, deployment and support," said the vendor in an official release.' (see Lucent, Juniper to Supply BT 21CN).

Nice to see that Orca has made Lucent 'put it's money where it's mouth is' this time.

Supercomm 2005 opened yesterday and will run to the 9th June.

Imho, expect to hear news of further Orca co-operative tie-ups at the show with other big names.

Meanwhile, 'THE' carrier prize worldwide is China Netcom who has already said they will deploy 1m IPTV lines during 2005. I wonder...
