26/4/2024 10:00 | LOL! You must be a great investor if you can make money in your sleep. Petrol not gone down around here this week. In fact a couple of more "touristy" stations have gone up a penny, now the season has started. Meanwhile, oil and the crack spread are creeping up so they'll probably have some more rises next week even though we never saw any falls this. Unjustified rises in supermarkets and petrol stations are possibly going to stop CPI hitting 2%. Diesel now 6p cheaper than petrol wholesale but 8p more expensive retail - a 14p rise in margin v petrol in only a few weeks and the margin on petrol looks to have crept up. | aleman
26/4/2024 09:00 | Just woken up from a nap on the couch to find that an offer has been made for DARK,think I'll go for another nap and see what happens! | malcolm caton
26/4/2024 08:51 | Cracking morning here. With little wind, the glorious sun is driving the temperature up rapidly. Already over 7C and frost long gone. I've just got to think of what I can manage today. Swelling is starting to go down slightly but that means the twinges are becoming a bit sharper for now. All going similar to last time so will be all right in a few days. But how do I enjoy the sun now? Mowing and cyling will have to wait. Might just drive somewhere near for another 20 min. walk. | aleman
26/4/2024 08:27 | Skinny, early sun? None of that here, I even gave in and topped the house batteries up a bit overnight as it looks like the sun is unlikely to make much of an appearance over the next couple of days. | mrphil
26/4/2024 08:25 | Morning All. Managed 4/7 on the quiz, better guessing than usual! Well I was told at the time that it was the Meloxicam & Ibuprofen taken for my back, coupled with a dodgy "one-way valve" which had caused the inflammation in my oesophagus leading to the prescription for Omeprazole. Friday is one of my Omeprazole days off and I can already feel slight discomfort. Aleman, not liking the sound of all this increase in business financial distress, but I must admit we are seeing some signs out there and are keeping a tight reign on our debtors. We have invested in some new staff in key roles and they will certainly be under pressure to pay their way as soon as possible. We are managing to put a decent increase on turnover but we're not quite where I want to be just yet. | mrphil
26/4/2024 08:07 | I did not spot the rise in Gilts yields yesterday afternoon. They definitely suggest we're down to 5 and 3 cuts in next two years - only marginally lower and not as bad as media scaremongering - but retreating as the MPC delays, of course. Delaying them is just creating horrible news like that Red Flag Report. Surely, after managing to get inflation back from double figures, allowing a few points above 2% would better than ongoing tight policy destroying loads of the UK supply chain, especially when CPI seems to be registering higher inflation than that implied by Retail Sales figures and loads of company reports. Spaish unemployment 12.3% versus 11.8% predicted. | aleman
26/4/2024 07:48 | Just back from an early Sainsburys run for our neighbour - despite the 5C indicated, the early Sun makes it feel like Spring - the rain is due back this evening. | skinny

26/4/2024 07:41 | Good morning. Harder frost this morning but the sun is out so it's warm in the house. UK recovering from recession? I think not. Interest rates are too high. The level of 'significant' financial distress leapt 30.8% year-on-year in Q1 2024 with 554,554 companies affected (Q1 2023: 424,041). 40,174 UK businesses are in 'critical' financial distress - a 20.1% increase compared to Q1 2023 (33,449) making them especially vulnerable to failure over the next 12 months. | aleman

26/4/2024 06:28 | Morning, Clear and bright with a ground frost here this morning. | malcolm caton
26/4/2024 06:28 | Good Morning. Phil - you will be glad to know that while you've been in sunny Malaga, the fantastic Spring weather just keeps on giving. 4/7. | skinny
25/4/2024 21:06 | Portfolio +0.56%. big thanks to AAL +15% and good results rises for AZN and ULVR…….. Still 20c here at 10pm local time. City Tour bus broke down at the port area this morning resulting in a five mile walk back to the hotel ☺️ϒ | philanderer
25/4/2024 19:23 | I'm down -0.534% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.479%). Worst falls: LGEN -6.36% XD, BA. -3.19% and ADM -23.60%. Best rises: AZN +5.94%, ULVR +5.67% and IMB +1.27%. A funny old day with those two huge rises from AZN and ULVR on their quarterly reports. They did the index more good than my portfolio. Just back from our weekly curry at Wetherspoons. A bit of rain in the air still. I did a brief spell in the garden this afternoon, dead heading my narcissii, and it was spotting then. DF | deanforester
25/4/2024 18:37 | Hernia's, there's another one I've heard lots of people mentioning about having had/got.. so far so good on that front I think! Hope tomorrow goes OK 👍 | carpingtris
25/4/2024 18:12 | carpringtris - talking of Jaws, I'm attending the funeral of a life long friend next week. I remember in the late 1970s, he had a hiatus hernia - where as now the operation is very straight forward (keyhole), back then he ended up with a scar shaped like a shark bite which was the width of his back | skinny
25/4/2024 17:56 | What causes stomach ulcers? Stomach ulcers occur when the layer protecting the stomach lining from stomach acid breaks down. This allows the stomach lining to become damaged. This is usually caused by: an infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or aspirin – particularly if they’re taken for a long time or at high doses There’s little evidence that stress or certain foods causes stomach ulcers. And Reflux :- | skinny
25/4/2024 17:53 | All this talk of our wounds is reminding me of a scene from Jaws. | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:52 | I thought specialist antibiotics worked on stomach ulcers these days. Are you all talking about ulcers that are resistant? (Never seen this thread as animated!) | aleman
25/4/2024 17:51 | Sounds nasty! Glad you've got things under control now. One of the worst pains I've had was an ear abscess.. couldn't do anything till it popped deep within my ear.. a week of antibiotics were required. 20 odd years ago. Can't wait to see what else gets thrown at me as I get older! | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:42 | carpingtris - I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy so to speak. The specialist that I saw @1999/2000, wouldn't let me keep the photo of my ulcers - otherwise I would have posted it for you :-))) For info :- Grade 0 – The stomach lining is in tact and there is no yellowing present. Grade 1 – The stomach lining is in tact but there are areas of yellowing. Grade 2 – There are small single or multiple superficial ulcers. Grade 3 – There are large single or multiple superficial ulcers. Grade 4 – There are extensive ulcers with areas of deep ulceration. Mine were Grade 3. | skinny
25/4/2024 17:33 | I see my talk of indigestion has sparked an interesting discussion.. I've wondered at times if I've had/got an ulcer in or near my stomach? Find I struggle with cheese and chocolate now without having issues in the past... oh and beer.. Maybe one day I'll get it looked at rather than just a phone call! Luckily the symptoms aren't the gnawing feeling I once had and only tend to take any indigestion tablets near nighttime if I've eaten late. Plenty to digest today! ;) | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:29 | +0.1%. Would have been worse without INCH rising 8% on its Q1 update - but it should have done that after the FY results, when it fell. Several weeks on and it's now over 25% higher than that low. Sellers will be kicking themselves. Glad it was not me for a change. My brief walk coincided with the sun starting to play out. I'd gone full winter (4 layers plus hat, scarf, gloves) thinking I might sit outside the local cafe for lunch but it was too cold even if the sunny spells were ok. I did have a very nice BLT sat inside though. The temperature in our garden shot up to the glorious heights of 11.0C later, after 1.4C, but it was only about 6C on my jaunt. I was breathless when I got home, which I think is just down to swelling which will abate in a day or two. So it's the bought quiches for tonight to make life easier. The Goodfellas Salt and Pepper Chicken pizzas we had last night for the first time got a mixed reception. I coped with the oddly strong fennel seedy 5-spice seasoning, but a couple of kids did not so I doubt we'll get them again. I think we prefer a more Italian style of thin pizza with more healthy stuff on than the typical doughy American/Pizza Hut/Goodfellas style. | aleman
25/4/2024 17:02 | Wish it was an all time closing high for my SIPP! | mrphil
25/4/2024 16:59 | That's the worry MrP - I've been on it for at least 20 years and Zoton before that. I would love to stop taking it, but as I said, if I miss a day, I start to feel the reflux pain again. I finished down 0.35%. I believe that's an all time closing high on the FTSE @8,078.86 after hitting 8,105.59 earlier. | skinny |
