It's a long term strategy .............

Talk down the performance of the company over a sustained period, offload a few thousand investors and watch the share price slump and then buy back and cancel their shares at a very low price.

Start to feed back the feel good factor and watch the share price recover to it's original pre slump price plus about 25%. It's a long term spot of genius by the board of Next.

Target long term selling price around £9 then and that after banking a few dividend payments ;-)

Charles Huggins, Investment Analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown said: 'This latest update won't do much to reassure investors, but with the shares having already lost a quarter of their value since the company's last sobering assessment, a lot of bad news was already being discounted.'

Strong-cash flow, strong Next Directory, good yield, good dividend cover; what is not to like? People will shop. March and April has been dire weather, and if you are like me, I just stay inside. PE now reasonably sensible. Next on-line is an excellent website and I believe home furnishings/furniture will outperform going forward.

Essential, thanks for the article; I am suspecting cash sales increase due to inroads into Europe (strong correlation there it seems) and credit would most likely have been under pressure because rate rises were expected.

I still think a cautionary tone is appropriate but I don't see many other stocks where the dividend is still this safe.

They've basically said that winter was too warm and that early Spring too cold.

They've also pointed out what we can feel when outside - it's warming up.

IF we get a period of seasonally-normal weather, sales performance should improve.

I presume the market is betting on normal weather going forward.

The annoying thing is this what I thought would happen and why I stuck with the share until now, overriding my stop loss on the way. I sold out at just after 8 on a 986.77 loss (big for me) as the negative spin from the press on the results and the initial move down panicked me as I was already past my tolerance. Kicking myself! Not only making the mistake to break two of my disciplines (stop loss and never sell before 8.30) but compounding it by breaking another: ignore the share for a week.

Dave, a case of already exceptionally low expectation,
so even though guidance was at the low end, it could have been worse.
Hesitated on buying this AM, ouch!.

Disco, It is negative, but it's a quality business with a p/e around 11, that is historically very cheap for this cash cow.

Oh I think it might finish today positive but I'm out for now. This is a good entry point but I think the share price will stabilise around here for the next couple of months and I will take my losses and revisit later.

results and guidance look ok
if they can hit the upper profit figure from the range they give.(£852m)
they will be on a modest pe of around 10.

Like I said at 80, it's just a warehouse full of bras and pants with a very good brand name and a ridiculous cap - imo only

20% profit on turnover is unsustainable.
This includes very high margins on store cards.
Wolfson always bought back shares at very high prices to support the share price over many years. It seemed to work.
There has always been an element of financial engineering here, just look at the net assets.
they are negligible.

Net assets can be seen as the wealth retained within the company over its entire life.
An odd company, a good one, but by some measures still way overpriced.

M, might be worth reading Questor on NXT,
don't always agree with that column by any means but a few valid points
were made, just imv only.

Would agree longer term NXT is a great company.

Q1 results tomorrow. Market doesn't look too positive on them today. I'm not sure I can take the capital loss of holding this much longer and I'm gambling on some sort of positive statement and a realistion that the share has been oversold even if the results are middling to poor.
