"Turnstile Gates

28 June, 2024

Ensuring safe and efficient access in public spaces, such as transport hubs, sporting and entertainment venues, and office buildings, requires effective access control. Turnstile gates are a popular option, ensuring that access can be controlled, allowing permitted personnel to enter the site or building, while restricting unauthorised access.

What are turnstile gates, what different options are available, how much do they cost, and what are the alternatives?

What are turnstile gates?

Turnstile gates are mechanical gates that are characterised by a revolving horizontal arm that allows a single person to pass through at a time. They are designed to regulate and monitor the flow of people entering or exiting a building, venue, or public space.

Turnstile gates ensure that only authorised people can gain entry and are a key component of a comprehensive security and access infrastructure. They also support safe and efficient crowd management by maintaining a steady flow of people and preventing congestion.

Turnstile gates can also be further integrated with a range of access control systems to ensure fast, seamless entry. Optical turnstiles use sensors to allow or deny access for a faster and more user-friendly experience.

How much does a turnstile gate cost?

The overall cost for turnstile gates can vary considerably depending on several factors. These will typically include the type of turnstile, the materials used in the installation, the sophistication of the access control system, and integrations that are needed. Any additional features or customisation required will also add to the overall cost of installing turnstile gates.

Simple, waist-high turnstile gates without advanced access control systems can start from around £1,000 to £2,000 per unit. If they are integrated with electronic access controls, such as biometric scanners or cards, the price can increase to anywhere between £2,500 and £5,000.

Full-height turnstile gates which offer a higher level of security will generally cost more. The prices can range from £3,000 to £6,000 per unit. If these are combined with sophisticated access control systems and other custom features, the cost can be higher.

Optical turnstile gates are known for their speed and aesthetic appeal. They will often include advanced sensors and sleek designs that can seamlessly blend into modern offices and other environments. These can range in price from a few thousand pounds to considerably more.

Installation and maintenance costs also need to be taken into account. Professional installation will vary depending on the type of gates and their location. A professional installation team will be able to provide you with a comprehensive quote based on your particular requirements.

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure that your turnstile gates can be relied upon to keep operating safely and efficiently. Maintenance and support agreements are available that provide peace of mind and can vary in cost depending on the complexity and usage of the system.

Are there any alternatives to turnstile gates?

There are a number of alternatives to turnstile gates, with speed gates being one of the most commonly installed options. Speed gates, sometimes known as fast lanes or optical barriers, are highly efficient and have a sleek design that makes them increasingly popular.

Speed gates use advanced sensors and motorised barriers that quickly retract to allow authorised individuals to enter and exit. Speed gates don’t require physical rotation by the individual attempting to gain access. Instead, they withdraw automatically when entry is granted providing a more seamless and faster entry process. They are often used in offices, public buildings, and other environments that require a combination of security and speed.

Speed gates have a number of advantages in some specific situations. Speed gates can process a high volume of people in a short time. This makes them ideal for busier areas that have heavy foot traffic. With no physical barriers to push or rotate, speed gates can provide a smoother user experience. Speed gates can minimise the risk of bottlenecks and busy periods and widen accessibility.

Speed gates are equipped with sophisticated sensors and can be integrated with access control systems. This allows for access to be monitored and controlled, restricting entry to only authorised individuals.

While in some contexts speed gates can be advantageous they are likely to cost more to install than turnstile gates. This is due to their complex mechanism, access control systems, and electric components. This added complexity can also mean that maintenance costs are also increased.

Other alternatives can include swing gates, barrier arms, and revolving doors. Each of these has unique features and may be suited to specific environments and requirements. The choice of access control solutions will largely depend on the specific needs of the installation location, including foot traffic patterns and security requirements.

Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, 27 June

2024 Theme: MSMEs and the SDGs

Leveraging the Power and Resilience of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to Accelerate Sustainable Development and Eradicate Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises

As we commemorate the 2024 International MSME Day, we are just six years away from the 2030 deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and progress is lagging. Many countries continue to face a range of unique and interconnected development challenges that include a cost-of-living crisis, constrained fiscal space, obstacles to accessing new sources of development and climate financing, and conflicts. Economic, social and environmental challenges are compounding mounting poverty and hunger.

The 2024 MSME Day offers an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas on how key stakeholders, including policy makers, large companies, financial institutions, and the international community can support micro-, small and medium-sized businesses to advance the 2030 Agenda and contribute to achieving the SDGs, including poverty eradication and decent work for all. ...

Background

MSMEs account for 90% of businesses, 60 to 70% of employment and 50% of GDP worldwide. As the backbone of societies everywhere they contribute to local and national economies and to sustaining livelihoods, in particular among the working poor, women, youth, and groups in vulnerable situations.

MSMEs hold the potential to transform economies, foster job creation, and promote equitable economic growth if given adequate support. The MSME Day event aims to highlight their pivotal role and explore opportunities for their further advancement.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 27 June as “Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day” (A/RES/71/279) to raise awareness of the tremendous contributions of MSMEs to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

Today, i.e. Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2024, is a great day to reflect both on NWT's great support to the SMEs sector, and also on its great success as an SME itself.

Albeit the way NWT is growing, it could easily pass the €50M. (currently = c. £42.5M.) annual turnover upper threshold for medium-sized companies within a few years:-

"SME definition"

Leaps forward in technology have facilitated the growth of the SMEs HCM (Human Capital Management) market, where many businesses still track employee hours manually.

And the massive cost savings - both direct and indirect - that can be achieved by moving to advanced time clocks like Newmark's are clearly a huge benefit to such companies.

So the market opportunity here is huge, and Newmark has a market leadership position that would be very difficult to dislodge.

" ... Continued development of our SaaS platforms

In the HCM markets generally, growth continues to be facilitated through the technological drivers of high-speed internet availability and the subsequent mass shift to Cloud based computing. This shift means that the traditionally challenging to serve and highly fragmented Small and Medium-Sized Business (SME/SMB) market is well within the reach of HCM providers leveraging a SaaS based business model.

Grosvenor developed the Custom Exchange and Assist IT software suite several years ago, as an 'On-Premise' deployment. Our applications remain hugely powerful solutions and key differentiators for Grosvenor, encompassing advanced data management/transformation and terminal provisioning, remote diagnostics and service capability.

Internal development has continued to focus on the provision of these added services on a 'as a service' basis, increasingly cloud-based, that aid software vendors to reap additional value from their hardware post-deployment. Grosvenor will continue to invest and develop HCM software platforms with a Cloud and API first approach, positioning the company as an accessible SaaS solution provider. This shift from "On Prem" to "Cloud SaaS" also affords the opportunity to an alternative or additional business model where Software, Services and Terminals are 'bundled' as a 'Clock as a Service' offering, generating further long-term recurring revenue potential. ..."

So they're just starting the fourth and final afternoon at SHRM24 in Chicago.

And it certainly looks like another cracking show for NWT ... which is becoming a bit of a habit!

A true inspiration to British industry, and the London stock market.

So it's currently high noon in Chicago for the guys from Cooper City, on day 2 of SHRM24.

Day 2 of dialogue about the move from analogue: as they give people the lowdown on the upside of their time clocks ...

It's beginning!

I'm posting this at about 3.35p.m. England time (give or take a minute or so), which means that it's just gone nine thirty in the morning in Chicago.

And though the team won't quite be 'hanging their knickers on the line', they should still be displaying their wares in a very eye-catching fashion!

SHRM24 gives us an ideal opportunity to showcase our innovative time clocks and give attendees a hands-on experience with the technology.

"We're looking forward to meeting attending HR professionals and demonstrating how we can enhance their workforce management strategies." - Ben Lagden, VP Commercial, GT Clocks.

Visit us at Stand #1725"

SHRM is the American version of the UK's CIPD: and being American, it is much bigger, as you would expect:-

"The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a professional human resources membership association headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. SHRM promotes the role of HR as a profession and provides education, certification, and networking to its members, while lobbying Congress on issues pertinent to labor management."
" ... now serving nearly 325,000 members in 165 countries ..."

"The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is an association for human resource management professionals. Its headquarters are in Wimbledon, London, England. The organisation was founded in 1913—it is the world's oldest association in its field and has over 160,000 members internationally working across private, public and voluntary sectors."

Similarly, SHRM's Annual Conference & Expo is double the length of the CIPD's Festival of Work, at a full four days, and indeed is the largest gathering of HR professionals on Earth.

And significantly, this year's event, in Chicago, is the first this decade held in the North of the USA: after the 2021, 2022, and 2023 events held in Las Vegas, New Orleans, and then Las Vegas again respectively.
The 2020 event scheduled for San Diego was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to that, the 2019 event was also held in Las Vegas, and the 2018 event was held in Chicago.

Well, working practices and technologies have moved on a great deal in the last 6 years, as has the offering from GT Clocks / Grosvenor Technology. A veritable revolution in fact.

So this exhibition could-should be very sweet for our company.

When you think that just one big partner can potentially generate £Ms. of revenue a year for the company, then the chance to make some good HCM connections here looks very compelling.
