Morning Losos

Yes, I wonder what Getting is up to - obviously enjoying himself to the full.

I agree that what GKN Powder Metallurgy doing is the way ahead. GKN are at the cutting edge of this technology and have implemented it in both the Aero and Auto companies. Can only drive up operating profit margin in the medium term by improving manufacturing efficiency and reducing waste greatly. And to Porky’s disgust reducing staff costs.

B+ - "But, I think “we band, we happy band” living in Gloucestershire, Cornwall and Norfolk (or is it Suffolk) plus Getting, who could be and is anywhere and everywhere, appear to enjoy one another’s virtual company."

'Morning B+ and all, it's actually Suffolk but right on the Norfolk border (and only ten miles or so from Nelsons birth place) that's assuming it was me you had in mind when you wrote that haha.

I completely agree with you regarding politicians, you said it all haha.

I also agree about the GKN Powder Metalurgy division, I know 'nowt about metal bashing but one has to admit that the benefits of 3D printing seem to be predicting the demise of old fashioned methods, it won't happen all at once of course and IMO there will always be some componants that can't (economically) be made with these new techniques, but if ever there was a 'future technology' that I could wholeheartedly support it's this. Thanks once again for posting that news.

I'll look out for any new forums that may be started, maybe we could split the two into MRO (financial) and MRO (leisure) in any event the terrible two will doubtless show up. I've only filtered one of them, the other moderates his language and although he is what I call a 'wind up merchant' he hasn't (to my knowledge) reverted to obsenities and such. I can handle 'wind ups' and 'sarcasm' if it's done with a good heart but not the stuff which one of the two has indulged in. Of course I've not read anything of his recently (and never will in the future) but it would seem he's still doing it haha.

Yes, I have problems working out where 'Getting' is at any point in time, and I also wonder how his 'air miles' account is doing, by my reckoning he could be going on a round the world cruise for free very soon with his 'air miles' haha.

Unbelievable how competent these silver-haired men are when they are part-time and their primary job is that of a gardener. LOL

Right, need to go out and mow the lawn. I mow the lawn, wife cooks lunch. Bowel movement probably just after lunch.

Well done on your selections. All forward looking companies and not living on past glories. That’s what I like about Melrose - building for the future.

Our garden is looking great. Wife handles the flowers and I grow what I enjoy cooking with.

Coming on nicely. Moreover, my share selections since January are motoring ahead. Somehow everything I bought since then has done wonders (Evraz, IWG, Manolete, Tate and Lyle). So glad I didn't fall for the Porky/Kipper mode of investment, y'know, if it's fallen a long way then pile in 'cos it can't go any lower type ethos - then it does exactly that!

Back to my borders now...

Yertiz

Have you looked at the Smithson interim report on the Smithson website. Says a great deal about the Fundsmith ethos. I particularly like

“However, several issues started to impact asset prices in the early Autumn, including an escalating trade war between the US and China, a deceleration in global economic growth, an increasingly disorderly Brexit and rising global interest rates, all of which caused market participants to grow more cautious. We could take this opportunity to opine at length on these issues but unfortunately it wouldn’t be worth much to you, because although we have our opinions, we don’t know what will actually happen in the future regarding these matters. In fact, just giving our opinions would likely cause you a disservice, because there is a chance you might actually believe what we say.”

NEWS FROM GKN POWDER METALLURGY - I’m really glad it hasn’t been sold off yet - it is the future.

BMBF RESEARCH PROJECT IDAM: NETWORK PUTS METALLIC 3D PRINTING ON TRACK FOR AUTOMOTIVE SERIES PRODUCTION

It was a start with far-reaching appeal: On March 27, 2019, the joint project IDAM held its kick-off meeting in Munich, which was intended to pave the way for Additive Manufacturing to enter automotive series production. Specifically, the project partners – consisting of SMEs, large companies and research institutions – will transfer metallic 3D printing into an industrialized and highly automated series process in the automotive industry for the first time. The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen and the Chair for Digital Additive Production DAP of RWTH Aachen University are supporting the project through their many years of experience in the field of additive manufacturing technologies.

The goal of IDAM is to promote the “Industrialization and Digitization of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for Automotive Series Processes”. In this project, twelve project partners are laying an important cornerstone to sustainably strengthen Germany's technological pioneering role and the country itself as a manufacturing location. By integrating metallic 3D printing into the conventional production lines of the automotive industry, IDAM will enable them to replace cost and time consuming processes, such as the production of molds, and to meet the desire for product customization at no extra cost.

Additive manufacturing of at least 50,000 serial parts per year

Metallic 3D printing is being implemented at two locations: the BMW Group's Additive Manufacturing Center in Munich and automotive supplier GKN Powder Metallurgy’s factory of in Bonn. There, the IDAM team is qualifying the AM technology for the specific requirements to produce identical parts as well as individual and spare parts on the basis of specific components. The targeted quantities speak for the signal character of the joint project: In the future, it should be possible to produce at least 50,000 components per year in mass production and over 10,000 individual and spare parts – at the highest quality and under extreme cost pressure – with the AM production lines.

Additive series production at the BMW

Two modular and almost completely automated AM production lines are being set up in Bonn and Munich. They cover the entire process, from digital to physical component manufacturing all the way to post-processing. Individual modules can be adapted to the different production requirements thanks to the modular construction of the line and, if necessary, replaced. In addition, their process steps can be controlled and utilized flexibly. By taking an integrated view of the automotive production line into account, the project partners plan on reducing the manual share of activities along the process chain from currently around 35 percent to less than 5 percent. In addition, the unit costs of 3D-printed metal components should be more than halved.

This structural optimized differential housing, jointly developed by GKN Powder Metallurgy and Porsche Engineering, is one of the growing new e-drive powertrain applications for Metal AM.

Interdisciplinary cooperation as a technology enabler

The expertise of the SMEs within the project consortium comes to the forefront in designing, providing and connecting the modules for the AM production line. Among other things, they take over the automation of the interfaces between the individual process steps or, as part of the project, develop a series-ready and modular production facility for metallic 3D printing. The other modular process components, such as powder handling, monitoring and automated post-processing, are also being developed by the SMEs. The research institutions are assuming tasks for process control, the digital twin and the preventive increase in quality, among others. Since large industrial companies are involved, these linked modules can be used in the AM production lines under real conditions and on a large scale. In addition, industrial standards can be set and industry-relevant quality characteristics elaborated. Only through this interdisciplinary cooperation does the IDAM project make it possible to holistically examine metallic 3D printing for automotive series processes and to establish it sustainably in production.

I try to keep off politics. I have no respect for politicians who quite honestly are a breed apart.

You are right in that a group of us do chat about the finer things of life, and do wind up Porky and Meanlodge - it’s very easy to do.

But, I think “we band, we happy band” living in Gloucestershire, Cornwall and Norfolk (or is it Suffolk) plus Getting, who could be and is anywhere and everywhere, appear to enjoy one another’s virtual company. Food and wine, dogs, gardening, holidays, we seem to have plenty of the positive things in life in common. Heaven forbid any of us should ever become negative with life.

I look forward to your new board and promise to only post about Melrose. Perhaps you should name it “Those Invested Only”!!

Best regards

B+

brexitplus.

Noted and accepted - and will consider.

In fact when I fired off my (despairing) earlier post, I almost added a line that you are virtually the only contributor who provides any relevant info on MRO (eg 9706). Mind you, you also make innumerable contributions about inter alia food, drink, leisure activities and politics as well which, dare I say it with all due respect, tend to encourage others to follow suit. Fortunately some of the latter have been on filter by me for over a year.

This thread has become around 96% (approx) irrelevant chat.

The time has come for a new thread on this company which ONLY discusses the company and its prospects/difficulties.

Anyone prepared to start one - providing they ruthlessly prevent unrelated chat?

The constant velocity joint, a cornerstone of GKN earnings generation, came into the company from a German acquisition. Germany is a key market, production source and research centre for MRO’s newly acquired business. Is schadenfreude applicable on a MRO bulletin board?

"That is the difference between a first-class human and one that lives in the gutter"

So tell us Minerve, is someone who wishes brain tumours on others on investment discussion boards a 'first class human' or 'one that lives in the gutter'?

Or how about someone who mocks still-births?

No cowardly dodging the question this time please!
