And More

“ROESRATH, Germany, Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The extensive safety and comfort equipment in modern vehicles is increasingly restricting the packaging space available for the powertrain. GKN has thus developed its series of countertrack® joints, which transmit the same power through a significantly reduced diameter (smaller by an average of ten percent).

This is facilitated by a characteristic S-shaped track profile and counter-running ball tracks – hence the name "countertrack." This new design delivers a reduction in internal friction, temperature and package size paired with an increase in transmitted torque and maximum articulation angle. The benefits can be summarized as follows:

Power losses reduced by 30 percent across the full articulation range

Weight reduced by 15 percent while performance figures increase

Lower operating temperature means the absorption/transmission of up to 25 percent more torque

The substantial weight reduction delivers consumption and CO2 benefits in the development of new vehicle models. It also enables a longer wheelbase while retaining the same performance. This provides development engineers with more interior space and improves handling characteristics.

GKN AEROSPACE OFFICIALLY OPENS STATE OF THE ART AERO-ENGINE REPAIR FACILITY IN MALAYSIA

Repair and research facility for customers in the Asian-Pacific region
Expansion strengthens Asian footprint

Recruitment ongoing for 150 employees, growing to 300 in 2020

GKN Aerospace has officially opened its repair and research facility for aero-engine systems in Johor, Malaysia. GKN Aerospace Malaysia reached this significant milestone on Thursday 4th October. GKN Aerospace Engine Systems Leadership came together with Federal and State Government officials from Malaysia, as well as investment partners and customers, to recognize GKN Aerospace’s establishment in the region and the importance of growing the Aerospace market in Southern Malaysia.

The event was well supported with over 50 guests attending and 4 guest speakers, including Joakim Andersson, CEO GKN Aerospace Engine Systems and Mr Arham, Deputy CEO, MIDA (Malaysian Investment Development Authority).

At the Farnborough Air Show in July of this year, GKN Aerospace announced the establishment of the aero-engine repair site and the creation of 150 jobs growing to 300 within two years. A team of 15 people has been built to date. GKN Aerospace has invested $30 million in the site and in its state of the art equipment and technologies. The expansion to Asia is an important part of GKN Aerospace’s long-term growth strategy and global operating model.

The site will initially focus on servicing engine low-pressure compressor (LPC) components for CFM56-5B, CFM56-7 and V2500 and will be operational in 2019. The research will be centred around the application of additive manufacturing technology into engine parts repair. The facility will complement GKN Aerospace’s existing component repair facility in San Diego, CA to meet growing demand in the Asia Pacific region, with investments targeting the growth in the single-aisle market expected in the region.

The support of the Malaysian Government and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) was essential in identifying the location for a suitable and competitive site and customers were closely involved and supportive from the start.

Joakim Andersson CEO GKN Aerospace Engine Systems said: “We are proud to extend our global presence with this new site in Malaysia. This new facility highlights our commitment to support our customers in Asia. This will definitely lead to exciting growth opportunities. We thank the Government of Malaysia for the excellent collaboration and for supporting and facilitating our decision to locate in their country”

GKN Aerospace already operates six facilities in Asia, delivering wiring systems, transparencies and services in China, India, Singapore, Thailand and Turkey. With this latest expansion, GKN Aerospace’s industry-leading engine systems business will have its first site in the Asian-Pacific region, which is a key growth market for the future.

GKN AEROSPACE OBTAINS FAA STC FOR ADS-B OUT MODIFICATION FOR BOEING NEXT-GENERATION 737

FAA has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to GKN Fokker Services for ADS-B Out modification for Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft

STC can be used to install all compliant transponder types in combination with every compliant GPS source offering a unique and valuable solution to operators with mixed configurations in their fleet

Multiple customers of GKN Fokker Services have already ordered the Boeing Next-Generation 737 ADS-B Out modification enabling them to be prepared for both the FAA and EASA mandates in 2020 while securing early adopter advantages.

ADS-B Out (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) is a common system on-board many aircraft that automatically broadcasts relevant data from the aircraft towards air traffic management organizations. ADS-B Out data includes the identity of the aircraft, the GPS location and direction of flight. A new, so-called Version 2 (DO260B), ADS-B Out system will become mandatory in 2020 in USA, Europe, UAE and various other countries. The new ADS-B Out mandate involves an upgrade or replacement of the ATC Transponder and the GPS receiver. This will enable optimization of the airspace and minimize the use of ground radar stations. In the next decade, most of the airspace throughout the globe will be using ADS-B as the primary means of surveillance, replacing radar. This will include the oceanic environment (Satellite ADS-B).

After obtaining EASA and FAA STCs for the Bombardier Q400 (ST04125NY) and the Airbus A320 Family (ST04157NY), GKN Fokker Services is expanding its ADS-B Out program to other aircraft types. These include the Boeing 737 Classic, 747, 757 and 767. GKN Fokker Services is also applying for STCs from other airworthiness authorities.

Erik Lous, Product Manager ADS-B Out at GKN Fokker Services said: “We are extremely happy with our FAA STC for our competitive and innovative ADS-B Out solution for the Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. It is truly differentiating, since it encompasses all compliant transponders and GPS sources. Our STC will also allow our customers to modify their aircraft very cost-effectively and with a minimum of downtime, typically during just one or two overnight checks. Furthermore, with our STC, the customer has the option to update existing transponders or replace the existing transponders with transponders from different vendors”.

MW, I very much doubt Tommy will think he got MRO at 95p because he has taken the time to understand the basics of how rights issues work, whereas some people haven't...
There is another fellow over on the RPC (packaging) thread who was similarly convinced he had managed to pick up RPC shares at a knock-down price (the term used is 'discounted' after all). But when I and others explained to him why that is not actually the case and explained why he would be no worse off if he had declined the rights offer he was at first surprised, but then took the time to digest this news and then became rather grateful for the trouble we'd gone to. But not in this case with you it seems.

will you be telling us today that the Melrose investor Tommy Hobgoblin must be losing a packet on his MRO shares, and that he also has Royal Mail eh?

Do your calculations first though, he may have got his MRO for 95p and his Royal Mail for free.

Hi Losos, yes waving the Union Jack at "Johnny Foreigner." And no gadgets was a blessing.

I saw your posting about auto cars. Totally agree. In our village we have one bus a week, commuters all set off at roughly the same time in different direction and farmers need to take their livestock to market.

On return from holiday, I made contact with an acquaintance I worked closely with on a committee who is a manager at Delphi Technologies, the company Liam Butterworth is coming from to be CEO of GKN Driveline. He in turn is putting me in touch with a manager at GKN Aerospace in Bristol he worked with until relatively recently. Hopefully I will be able to glean some information on what is happening there. Will report back.

Fascinated to know what is keeping you busy. Garden? Workshop?

Poikka - "if MRO play their cards right GKN will come good."

I'm sure the MRO directors have a plan, I'm equally sure that it may take a tad longer than with their past aquisitions, GKN was a big one.

SP down a lot recently but perked up today, where will it be on Oct. 16th 2019 ??

Where will any of us be on that date haha.

getting,
I have to tell you that I've no control over my wife's research activities (I don't believe much in control) and she had already researched your newly demonstrated psychotic disorder. It is termed "Schadenfreude syndrome", wishing ill of others.

Rather strangely perhaps, it is often found in subjects/victims suffering from the "Fregoli Syndrome", which she had identified in you last week and I mentioned here. She also tells me that occasionally, when episodes of the 2 occur together, the subject wishes ill of someone who either doesn't exist or he thinks exists only as another person.
We'll all be looking carefully at your posts for examples of that one. I may offer a small prize for the first person to spot one.

I don't know what work you do but, with this cluster of disorders, it must be a bit of a nightmare for your colleagues and your boss.

I can understand why MEANWHILE holds the stock but is critical about somethings of the company - those actions are not mutually exclusive.

Perhaps to simpletons they are because simpletons only need a word from mates to switch to another herd share. Proper investors understand companies very well. Finding other companies that suit you and doing the proper due-diligence take time. A lot of time. You need to find another share that is truly better - not the latest tip from your chimp mates.

I made the most money out of a company I was very critical of, more than any other ever, and to this day - my own!

Getting,
The reason I’ve never taken you seriously is that you make the most ridiculous assumptions about the actions others have taken or should have taken.
A little criticism of Melrose and we get “why don’t you sell all your shares”.
Poikka saw a fall coming so he gets “if you had thought that you’d have shorted the share”.
If you carry on with this my wife will be awarding you another psychotic disorder to go with the 3 already allocated.

If the shares fall much further, the interim dividend could reach a generous 1%. Hardly an attraction to dividend seekers though. A total payout of around £75M.

If they also recall the special dividend earlier in the year to the big 3 (I think they called it an 'incentive bonus', while most of us see our pay as incentive enough) totalling £150M (2x the interim total), dividend seekers will be even more repelled.

Maybe the real problem with Melrose at present is that potential new investors just don't like the look of the company and the apparent rewards to its shareholders while loyal shareholders have decided they don't like being treated with contempt.

Yachts don't tend to hang around The Cayman Islands like they do other Caribbean beauties like St Thomas/St John/BVI. Been to Grand Cayman loads of times - as I have most Caribbean Islands. English coffee shop just opposite Senor Frogs. You get an English newspaper and a bacon butty. I've seen Roman's previous yacht, Le Grand Bleu, at St Thomas. Probably the best super-yacht I've ever seen. Photos on the internet just don't do it justice. I don't like the oligarchs, but I have to say, Roman's tastes are the best of any of the billionaires that I am aware of. I've also seen Paul Allen's yacht off of Grand Caymen, but most don't tend to visit The Cayman Isles; not en-masse like to some of the other islands.

"then you'd have been shorting it down from 220p and now on a yacht in the Cayman Islands?"

Not everybody who thinks a share price may fall, shorts it with a view to going off to the Cayman Islands, or any such place. I don't know anybody who does.

He may well have thought the price would fall but taken no action.

I like the numbers for electric vehicles down the article

“GKN Automotive's Chinese joint venture, Shanghai GKN Huayu Driveline Systems (SDS), has officially opened a new technical centre in the suburb of Kangqiao to specialise in research and development of constant velocity joint (CVJ), All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and eDrive systems. The opening also marks 30 years since GKN established its automotive joint venture in China, the first Tier One supplier to do so.

Through SDS, GKN Automotive is expanding the engineering development resource in the region at the newly constructed facility on the outskirts of Shanghai. Around 300 jobs have been created at the facility, initially to work with customers in China on local applications of existing eDrive, AWD and CVJ technologies. The JV partners expect the centre eventually to have expertise and resource to project lead global new product development.

Substantially greater physical space for R&D will be accompanied by a "significant increase" in the number of specialist engineers, by nearly 50% over the next three years. It is anticipated the new centre will prove attractive to engineering talent in China as SDS wants to attract the best graduates in their fields to continue its success in this critical, huge market.

John McLuskie, president of GKN Automotive China, said: "The official opening of the new technical centre in Shanghai represents another step in a major investment programme in what is currently the most significant market for eDrive. Growth of vehicle electrification is accelerating faster in China than anywhere else in the world. GKN Driveline established the first Tier One joint venture of its kind in the country 30 years ago and SDS is set now to play a leading role in the next era of China's automotive industry."

SDS has already built a claimed market leading position in CVJs and driveshafts and continues to innovate and introduce advanced technology. The expansion of SDS' capabilities for eDrive technology will meet higher demand from new and existing OEM clients, with development and manufacturing initially serving a raft of new business wins – for electrified powertrains in particular. Engineers will have the opportunity to contribute to some of the most advanced eDrive systems in the world, including bespoke eAxle technologies that will be exported to clients' factories in Europe.

The joint venture is now targeting market leadership of eDrive systems in China and its significant investments in new production and development facilities will enable the business to take advantage of the rapid acceleration in demand for electrified drivelines.

Production of electric and hybrid vehicles in China is forecast to grow by more than 400% by 2025, to just under 4m vehicles per year. The scale of the SDS eDrive production hub in China will increase in parallel over the next seven years, with additional supply agreements set to commence for a range of domestic and international car manufacturers. GKN Automotive forecasts that SDS' eDrive production will reach 1m units annually by 2025.

SDS soon will also open a newly-constructed, eDrive plant in Pinghu, Zhejiang province, which will mark the beginning of a significant increase in manufacturing capacity for the joint venture.
