WW2 base RAF Desborough earmarked for 50MW solar farm

By Liam Stoker | 06 May 2015, 9:37 Updated: 06 May 2015, 13:41

Solar Panel.

The 112 hectare site would have a 50MW capacity, making it one of the largest solar farms in the country.
A former World War 2 airbase in Kettering has been earmarked by developers to be the site of a new 50MW solar farm.

A planning application submitted to Kettering Borough Council early last month details how RAF Desb Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Northfield UK Solar, intends to develop the RAF Desborough airfield which has laid dormant since it was retired in 1953.

The submission also includes plans for the construction of associated CCTV masts, control building and substations, and the 112-hectare site is to be connected to the national grid at nearby Wilbarston village.

The developer held a public consultation with Wilbarston residents in early February prior to submitting plans to the council on 9 April and consultation documents were sent to neighbours two weeks later, however the site was only publically advertised last week.

Consultations must be sent to Kettering Borough Council by 14th May, and a decision is expected to be reached by 30th July at the latest.

Northfield UK Solar was founded in 2013 and has been backed by capital investment firm Marechale Capital, the last financial injection occurring in March this year, and the developer claims to have exclusivity on a number of utility-scale solar sites totalling 400MW.

Northfield UK Solar declined to comment on this story when approached by Solar Power Portal.
