12/12/2024 12:50 | It's so difficult to get accurate estimates for how much all the different types of energy generation cost. Having an interested in RR SMR's some accounts compare closely to renewables whilst others estimate a 20% uplift. Either way when it's overcast & flat calm like today and most days in Winter for that matter its an irrelevant comparison because most of our power will be generated from LPG bought from US or Qatar which as you rightly say is probably the least cost effective way to do it! I wouldn't be at all surprised if those tasked with coming up with UK energy policy have given any attention to UK weather patterns. We appear to be following Germany's disastrous lead on this one. | utrickytrees

11/12/2024 22:38 | Military operation in Ukraine11 Dec, 14:38 Russian troops gradually eliminate Ukrainian forces in Kharkov frontline area — official Vitaly Ganchev added that Russian troops were conducting active operations across the entire Kharkov frontline MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. The Russian Army has been using artillery and aircraft to systematically destroy formations of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kharkov Region, Vitaly Ganchev, the head of the regional military-civilian administration, told TASS. "The current situation in the Kharkov section of the frontline involves the gradual destruction of the enemy through aircraft and artillery," he said. He added that Russian troops were conducting active operations across the entire Kharkov frontline. "If we take into account the characteristics of the territory where the fighting is taking place, we can see that clearing the Kharkov Region will take some time. It’s hard for our troops, but even harder for the enemy," the official noted. | stonedyou
11/12/2024 22:36 | Military operation in Ukraine 11 Dec, 16:04 Russia to retaliate to Kiev’s ATACMS missile attack on Taganrog airfield — top brass The ATACMS missile fragments that fell on the Taganrog military airfield caused injuries among the personnel and no destruction on the ground, the Russian Defense Ministry said MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. Russia will retaliate to Ukraine’s ATACMS missile attack on the Taganrog military airfield, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday. The Kiev regime delivered a strike by six US-made ATACMS long-range ballistic missiles at the military airfield in Taganrog in southern Russia on the morning of December 11. Two of the missiles were shot down by a Pantsyr air defense system while the others were deflected by electronic warfare systems, the ministry said. "This attack by Western long-range weapons won’t be left unanswered and corresponding measures will be taken," the ministry said in a statement. The ATACMS missile fragments that fell on the Taganrog military airfield caused injuries among the personnel and no destruction on the ground, the ministry said. "There are injuries among the personnel as a result of the fall of missile fragments. There is no destruction while minor damage (shrapnel damage) was caused to two buildings on the airfield’s technical premises, three military motor vehicles and also civilian cars on a parking lot adjacent to the airfield," the ministry said. | stonedyou

11/12/2024 18:23 | He made his fortune in the UK I presume. I do not get the logic. Is he not grateful that he made a few million out of his UK engineering activities in this country? You should both stop reading the Daily Mail or Telegraph and appreciate the advantages of UK citizenship. If he does leave with his cash he should not be allowed back in without paying a substantial fee. I hope he is not reduced to creeping back into the UK on a rubber boat crossing the channel. | careful
11/12/2024 17:21 | You need to broaden your view. QoL isnt measured by what a country reckons its GDP is and by other stats that you like to Google. As I always used to tell arja - the first step to comprehension is to make sure you read what is written not what you think is written. The chap who wants a wall redesigning is a customer not a 'pal'. As a chap who built up a large engineering company and made himself a good few million on the way Im sure he will appreciate your advice on why the filth ridden crime infested grey, cold and sodden streets should just be ignored as the UK is as you say a rich country by any standards and a super place to share with the Afghan, Somalian, Albanian and no doubt soon Syrian immigrants (Im surprised you dont say refugees). I will let him know that you have googled and discovered that the UK is a rich country although I dont know why you assume that just because hes a millionaire and has the cash to live wherever he wants hes not as clued up as you - but then I guess hes not as obsessed by google. Oh as for Oman and Malaysia - it was just a headline in the DT. I really wasnt that interested to google it. Thanks though I will let everyone know. | scruff1
11/12/2024 16:52 | Scruff You seem to be confused about the size of the Oman and Malaysian stock markets. They are tiny compared to the UK total cap of $3.2 trillion. GDP Malasia is about $400bn. Uk $2.5 trillion GDP Oman. $108bn The UK is a rich country by any standards, you must accept this. That is why immigrants want to come here. Your pal who wants to go elsewhere should do his research. | careful
11/12/2024 16:25 | Total tax take is about £1.1 trillion. Reeves increased it by about 4% or £40bn. They were restricted because of the pre election pledge not to raise personal taxes. They had the election in the bag unless they did something really stupid. Nigel refused to stand down in Tory seats this time so the Tories were crushed. They must have feared a Truss type bond market event if they paid off the public sector without getting tax money in. The National insurance rise was awful but hey needed to raise the money from somewhere. I thought how they did that was smart. If companies made capital investments and not share buybacks they could avoid the corporate tax. Interesting to see how they will handle things from now on. The first 5 months will soon be forgotten. Pleased to see them take on the farmers though. There are too many tax dodge loopholes that need to be closed. Not nearly enough though. Normal couples can get IHT £1m tax free with 40% on the rest. Tax paid up front. Farmers £3m tax free with 20% on the rest, Ten years to pay. Too generous. | careful
11/12/2024 15:14 | Your lad is doing a good job anyway. He went to the ME to drum up interest and trade with the UK and to underline his bargaining skill and charisma the UAE afterwards signed a trade deal with Russia. Maybe its because we dont take enough taxes off businesses eh careful? At the same time I see our stock market has slipped below Malaysia and Oman. Wonder how the Economic Dynamic Trio are going to tax us out of that little problem. | scruff1
11/12/2024 15:00 | Tricky lad. The Treasury IS organised crime. No tax increases and living beyond our means will cause a sudden spike in interest rates. Then things get serious. More nonsense. Bloody hell careful give it a rest. No tax increases - YER WOT? What was CGT? Windfall Tax? Business Rates? NI? IHT? Council Tax? Car Tax? What are you injecting? No one seems to accept a lower standard of living when the country is struggling. That is what is happening. Some dont have to like your mates - free glasses, suits, penthouse flats, US holidays, subsidised heating. Get a grip son | scruff1

11/12/2024 14:43 | Russian Army Approaches Decisive Battle For Pokrovsk Support SouthFront The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue developing their offensive in the Donbass, rapidly advancing in the Pokrovsk and Kurakshovo directions. On December 10th, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially confirmed the full control of the village od Zheltoe (Zhovte) located west of Selidovo and south of Pokrovsk. According to the Russian military, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost over 575 soldiers, a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle and a US-made M113 armored personnel carrier made, two vehicles, a 152 mm D-20 cannon and three 122 mm D-30 howitzers in this direction over the past day. ‘Russian forces defeated the manpower and equipment of three mechanized, motorized infantry, assault brigades and an assault battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of the settlements of Dzerzhinsk, Shcherbinovka, Dimitrov, Petrovka and Pushkino in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Russian forces repelled eight Ukrainian counterattacks in the Pokrovsk direction,’ the Russian Ministry of Defense reported. Meanwhile, Russian forces are rapidly expanding their zone of control approaching Pokrovsk and strategically important roads nearby. According to preliminary reports from the battlefield, the town of Novotroitskoe came under Russian control and Russian forces are completing the mop up operations in the village of Shevchenko. According to Ukrainian reports, the Ukrainian military lost control of Shevchenko. These settlements are located on the Kurakhovo-Pokrovsk road, where Ukrainian military supplies and communications were cur off. The advancing Russian forces are expanding their bridgehead for the further assault on Pokrovsk from the southern flank. Their attacks allow to advance in different directions. Clashes are ongoing in Pushkino and Russian forces approached the outskirts of Novoolenovka to the south. Battles began in Dachenskoe to the north. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are still resisting in Lysivka. After their defense was destroyed in the areas east of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces are hastily reinforcing the outskirts of the city but the ongoing Russian attacks in different directions force them to disperse forces in different areas on a wide front. Russian drone strikes on the French Caesar, Ukrainian train and infantry According to some forecasts, the battle for Pokrovsk and its outskirts may play the decisive role in the war. From the military point of view, this is the last fortified stronghold, after which there are still no solid lines of defense. Ukrainian soldiers complained that there are only some purely fortified trenches west of Pokrovsk and the way to the Dnipropetrovsk region is protected by “one anti-tank ditch in the middle of the field.” The loss of Pokrovsk and areas nearby will deal a critical blow to the economy of the whole country. Together with Pokrovsk, Kiev will lose the only mine with strategic reserves of coking coal, which provides the entire Ukrainian metallurgical industry. Last year, it provided the country with more than 90 percent of the rare coal of the “K” brand used by the largest enterprises in Ukraine and abroad. It is mainly mined in a mine located in the village of Udachnoye located on the southwestern outskirts of Pokrovsk. Russian troops are only 8 kilometers away from this village. Another important trophy of the Russian military are lithium deposits located on the eastern outskirts of Shevchenko. In January, 2024, Kiev sold the deposits together with the European Lithium Ukraine company, which had lithium licenses in Ukraine, to the European Lithium company for €184 million. The deal was agreed in January on the day of Rishi Sunak’s visit. Ukraine made a generous gift to British partners: Australian European Lithium closed a deal to acquire European Lithium Ukraine LLC (formerly Petro Consulting) with lithium licenses in Ukraine. The Australian European Lithium Limited (British satellite) has become the sole owner of the European Lithium Ukraine company instead of Mikhail Zhernov, and Anthony Sage became the only beneficiary. The British received the right to exploit the fields in Dobroe and Shevchenko. But the advancing Russian army thwarted their plan. Support SouthFront | stonedyou
11/12/2024 14:40 | Interesting that the French government was bought down after trying to get a tax raising budget into law. The amount was only slightly higher than those in the Reeves budget. French government debt is breaking EU rules. Yet they are unable to do unpopular measures to correct it. Is this what will happen here if the government need to raise taxes again or will the huge majority help them through? Maybe the back bench extremist break away. Eventually the bond markets will show these people who is in charge. No tax increases and living beyond our means will cause a sudden spike in interest rates. Then things get serious. No one seems to accept a lower standard of living when the country is struggling. That is what is happening. | careful |
