Its not about economics careful - as you well expound - and it never really was. Its about one group of people like kk who clearly dislikes smoking and the couple previously described by tricky in Buxton wishing to impose what they believe to be their superior views on everyone else. Its very similar to the Remain/Leave interminable discussion. IMO its one of our societies main problems of our age. One group believing they are right - no discussion, no debate end of - similar to the no platforming nonsense at universities making democracy defunct.

It seems to me that smoking has not been handled well by the Government. Instead of totally banning smoking indoors in public establishments, it would make more sense to segregate completely smokers and non smokers in public establishments such as pubs, restaurants, club's, cinema's etc by licensing a certain percentage of these to allow smoking inside. Smokers would go to establishments where it was permitted, and non smokers would go to establishments where it was not permitted. Problem solved, everyone has the freedom of choice which type to go to, smoking or non smoking. Everyone is happy.

You must understand the numbers.

If the cost to the NHS was the only important factor then you must understand that if everyone stopped smoking and there were no premature deaths, people living longer, it would cripple the country and its finances.

The financial plusses are;
The tax on cigarettes
People living shorter lives.

If everyone died 10 years earlier we would be a very rich country.
Old retired people cost a fortune in many ways.
Non smokers when they are old get expensive treatment for other conditions over a longer period.

The financial cost of smoking is the cost of treatment at the end of their short lives.

So the economic argument made for stopping smoking is wrong.

If these migrants coming via boats are paying say $3000 to people smugglers to cross the channel as reporters have mentioned how about they are made to pay say $3000 non refundable to UK to cover coast guard services expenses and for processing the application, accommodation etc etc...it might just deter others from coming via this dangerous route...

the main-stream, thinking majority down and attempting to control even the simplest pleasures in their lives. Where will it end? Badly for him and his comrades, in my view, right from the very first by-election. Just a question of how much societal, political and economic damage he does in the meantime.

Scruff.You do utter total nonsense at times and when it comes to smoking this is certainly one of those times. I am a conservative supporter but on this one issue I would support any measure that limits smoking. It is a filthy habit that benefits nobody. I would also be happy to contribute more in tax as a consequence if it means we have a health service that actually works and is not having to waste time treating idiots who are hell bent on suicide.

If they're going to ban cigarettes they need to ban kids breakfast cereals aswell. Cereals contain corn starch which spikes insulin levels raising hunger levels and obesity.

Banning smoking sounds like a good idea, but would result in a net loss of approximately £10bn revenue annually for the treasury. Smoking related illness costs the NHS around £2.5bn annually. Including VAT, total tobacco revenue for the treasury is around £12.3bn annually. So they would have to raise taxes more elsewhere or introduce new taxes to make up this £10bn shortfall to the treasury.

Those who believe it is their right need protecting from themselves.

Ukrainian Army Threatened With New Strategic Retreat

Massive Russian strikes in Ukrainian rear regions do not stop for several days in a row. On the night of August 29, another combined attack of Russian drones and missiles targeted Ukrainian military and industrial infrastructure in a dozen cities throughout the country, including in the capital. The Ukrainian military in the border Sumy and Kharkiv regions are pounded by Russian bombs.

At night, the Kyiv region came under a massive attack. Russian strikes were reported in the village of Obukhov, located on the outskirts of the capital. The second attack in a week targeted Borispil airport used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Precious military cargo from NATO is stored there, including equipment necessary for the repair and restoration of NATO military equipment, as well as weapons and ammunition supplied by Kyiv’s Western “partners”. More strikes hit the capital itself. Electricity supplies were cut off in several districts of the city.

In their turn, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted new attacks in the Russian rear regions. This time, the Crimean peninsula became one of the targets. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, at night Russian air defense forces destroyed 6 Ukrainian unmanned vehicles in the border Bryansk, Belgorod regions and the Republic of Crimea. Three Ukrainian unmanned boats were destroyed in the Black Sea near Sevastopol.

Meanwhile, the standoff continues in the Russian Kursk region. The Ukrainian military is banging its head against the wall of the Russian defenses. Ukrainian motorized groups are launching assault in different directions around Sudzha, as a result, their losses grow but the frontlines remain unchanged. According to available footage, Russian forces began launching their upgraded FAB-3000 heavy bombs on the Ukrainian military positions on the Russian territory. Such devastating strikes result in heavy damage to the local infrastructure but they leave no chance to the Ukrainian military to save its reserves.

While Ukrainian forces are ground in the north, the Russian army is swiftly advancing in the Donbass. Ukrainian defense was ruined on a wide front in the Pokrovsk direction, Ukrainian are fleeing from their strongholds to the west. The Russian army is already approaching the center of Selidovo, one of the largest settlements in the area. Russian forces took control of a strategically important stronghold on the height on the outskirts and force the enemy to retreat from a wide area. Demoralized Ukrainian servicemen are offering only weak resistance.

The goal of Russian offensive is to reach the line of Pokrovsk-Selidovo-Kurahovo-Ugledar and straighten the front.

At the same time, Russian forces achieved new victory in the Ugledar direction. Large Ukrainian stronghold in the town of Konstantinovka came under Russian control. The mop up operations continue in the settlement, while Russian advance along the road forces Ukrainian units to retreat from Pavlovka. The strategic threat to the Ukrainian army is growing.
