The vote was not conditional on people having thought through what to expect 'in the future'. It was remain or leave, in that order and the majority who turned out voted to leave.

My biggest fear is probably the same as yours, that the Brexit party will split the vote and constituents in majority who dont want labour will get them by default.
I do wish that they and the conservatives had worked something out to avoid this.
