Thatcher was beyond doubt one of the greatest leaders we ever had. The coal and steel industries had,had there day.Imports from the far east were far cheaper than we could produce here. The Australians exported coal and Iron ore to us cheaper and better quality than we could produce and ship it half way around the world.
You are correct exlogicalad she was a leader, pity we didn't have someone of that quality in government today.

Minerve does more to promote Brexit with his mealy mouthed comments than he realises. He must be converting scores of Remainers every day to Brexit.
Keep it up Minerve we will have that bad deal thrown out and leave the EU under WTO rules yet.Roll on..

Tygarreg, Yes of course other parts of the country were hit and it wasn't just coal, it was the destruction of the Steel and Shipbuilding industries which actually did the most damage to us (and others in the North of England & Wales).

It goes much deeper than that of course, Thatcher didn't even try to save these industries and in fact saw it as the perfect way of destroying the Unions, the fact that we weren't competitive was in many cases nothing to do with the workers but in fact processes and also the fact that we built our steel mills in the wrong places due to political pressures, as a result we had lots of additional costing and logistical issues as we had to transport by road and rail when this wasn't actually necessary.

Of course it didn't end there, there was no new investment for the hardest hit areas as the Governments of the time had no interest in these areas either politically or Economically, so basically let them rot. High unemployment, high mortality rate and low life expectancy still abound in these areas but nobody gives a toss.

In many respects that's why we had the Brexit result that we did, as people in these areas did, and still do, feel disenchanted, left behind and basically a million miles away from the bright lights and wealth of "the city".

Not the EU to blame, but Brexit did provide the opportunity to blame someone and who better than the likes of your Cameron's and Osborne's of this world..........

You miss the point. Nobody should be attacked for their political views. I'm highlighting that the media seem to only want to highlight one side of the attacks.

Anyone who feels it right to attack someone because they don't share the same views should be locked up for a long time.

Minerve, you are always fishing for a response. Is this because you are an out of work fisherman since the eu closed down our fishing industry?

Take your point, Freddie. Crazy Soubry got accosted by a group of nutters outside Parliament, and achieved the headline on BBC Online News; NfD MP beaten half to death by nutters and gets a mention on World news.

Both bad news, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the beeb will milk the Soubry story for all its worth.
