Home Office rejects Nicola Sturgeon plan for Scottish visa after Brexit

The Home Office has given short shrift to a demand by Nicola Sturgeon for a separate Scottish visa system to boost immigration after Brexit.

The First Minister unveiled a blueprint that would see migrants applying to the her government for a visa if they pledged to stay in Scotland.

Unlike the existing UK visa system, which would continue to operate in parallel, there would be no minimum salary threshold or fee for applicants.

Ms Sturgeon insisted a new visa was required to support Scotland's working age population, with freedom of movement ending thanks to Brexit and deaths exceeding births north of the Border.

She said that HM Revenue & Customs would help prevent migrants disappearing straightaway to England, stating that they would be issued with a Scottish income tax code....

Nicola Sturgeon is riding for a fall, I have just returned from a week up in Edinburgh staying with my in laws.

I was very surprised to learn how unpopular Sturgeon and the SNP are with the Scottish middle classes. I played Golf and over a few pints in the clubhouse there wasn't a good word for the SNP.

I guess that she must be popular in working class areas where unlike here in Northants everyone is cheerin on Brexit.

mitchy : If the Asian indices repeat today's declines tomorrow then the 56-57p resistance level could well be breached. In all honesty the share price has faired reasonably well today bearing in mind the current slide on markets around the globe . Reckon a 5% correction is very much on the cards this week . Whatever ...if my 55p buy order is filled I'll be content to hold. My only other position is CNA ..where I have a short placed at the off this morning at 90.96.... taking advantage of global sell-off. Long term I see CNA as a solid recovery play.
