24/2/2019 19:26 | warranty You are deluded if you think something that was created back in the '70s wouldn't go through much needed change. The world is a completely different place than it was back then. Globalisation and the internet - primarily via social networks - has made the world and its people different to what they were then. I think you are well out of touch with the increasingly mobile youth, they don't see divisions like you do and cultures are more accepted rather than feared. You only need to look at the average age of a Tory party member to show you how well out of touch you dinosaurs of the '80s are. David Cameron only went to the EU because he feared a split in the Tory party and that has been the problem that has remained to this day. Even if you had been given regular votes on EU issues most people in the UK would fail to grasp the consequences of their actions - like they do now - or get anywhere near understanding the problem. That is why we have governments that run the country. The country isn't run well by a committee numbering more than 60M! We have MEPS to represent us, perhaps you should raise that concern with Mr Farage. Most Leave voters generally didn't see the EU as an issue five years' ago. They probably didn't even think about it that much. They would just kick-off the occasional whinge over fishing rights, bent/straight bananas or playground swing heights from time-to-time but they would get on with their lives without giving the EU much thought. So Cameron, for all the wrong reasons, gave us the vote. Was it democratic? The answer was absolutely not! We had the Boris bus lies. We had corruption and electoral rules broken. We had interference from other countries like the US. We had a smorgasbord of right-wing propaganda to brainwash the ignorants. So, what is going to be the result of a Hard-Brexit? The result will be that we will have to reduce corporation tax and sweeten business for the multi-national big corporations. This most likely will mean a reduced income for the government and a final nail in the coffin for most services. Working conditions will not improve and will most likely worsen. Employees' rights will not improve and will most likely worsen. You say you care about the youth, I think your actions are ill thought out. Younger generations today have to work two jobs just to break even. They have to commute further. They can't rely on public services. They will not be able to buy their first house until well into their 30s. The mortgages they have will not clear until well into their 60s and 70s. If they are graduates they will have £100K of debt between them on student loans. And, if this list isn't bad enough, they will have to find money for a pension where investments will not see the growth they have had over the last 3/4 decades and they will need to find money for health care and personal care. Great legacy. Not something I would be proud of. I would put a gun to my head if that was my legacy to our youth. ;) | minerve
24/2/2019 19:05 | When Irish eyes are blackened 'Dublin created a MONSTER!' IDS warns Ireland to cave or face 'BIG TROUBLE' with no deal IRELAND has been warned the country would be in "serious, deep trouble" should the UK leave the European Union without a Brexit deal as Iain Duncan Smith urged Irish leader Leo Varadkar to agree to the removal of the backstop from the withdrawal agreement. Iain Duncan Smith insisted the insurance mechanism created to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit would be "unimplementable" as he urged the Irish Government to agree to change the withdrawal agreement. The Tory Brexiteer warned Dublin the country would face "big trouble" if the UK were to leave without a divorce arrangement – a risk some political experts have claimed is becoming greater as the March 29 deadline draws nearer. Responding to claims Ireland will not budge made by Irish deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney, Mr Duncan Smith told Sky News: "What I would say to Simon Coveney is, you’ve created a monster at the moment. "Ireland itself is in deep trouble if we leave without a deal. I mean serious, deep trouble. They’re not talking about that, there are big questions being asked in Ireland. "Of course Mr Coveney is going to come on and say ‘no change’ but behind the scenes, in the European Union, they know very well that they do not want us to leave without a deal. The right thing to do is to make the changes." Brexiteers have expressed fears that the backstop – an insurance mechanism effectively keeping Northern Ireland in the customs union and single market to protect frictionless trade with the Republic – could be exploited to keep the whole kingdom closely aligned to Brussels. Mr Duncan Smith also suggested the European Union is aware the backstop would not resolve the issue as he urged the bloc to cave to demands for reopening the withdrawal agreement. | stonedyou

24/2/2019 17:44 | Andy Posted February 24, 2019 at 1:55 pm | Permalink And Mrs May’s deal does all those things and you still will not vote for it. Odd. (Except we all know that you will vote for it in the end). Reply Richard1 Posted February 24, 2019 at 3:21 pm | Permalink Mrs May’s deal, if it includes the backstop, keeps us indefinitely in the customs union. It also cedes northern Ireland as a kind of EU colony without a vote of its people. Even Without the backstop it simply involves handing over £39bn in exchange for 21 months of EU limbo at the end of which there may or may not be a sensible FTA. Sir John and others have been right all along – had we proposed a comprehensive FTA to start with we would most likely now be leaving with such an arrangement in place and everyone could calm down. | xxxxxy

24/2/2019 16:47 | Brexit means Brexit. Fight for it. Dominic Posted February 24, 2019 at 7:07 am | Permalink Most of those who despise this PM will not be surprised by the betrayal that is about to be unleashed upon the British people. May’s an offence on many levels. Her liberal left enthusiasm knows no bounds. Her capacity for mendacious and sinister politics is unlimited. Since she became PM I noted a few what may seem minor changes since my party idiotically elected this person as our leader. Her statement about how we will be judged by how we treat so called minorities sounded ominously like a threat. Victim based politics is the politics of social control and a hatred for freedom of expression. Secondly, the removal and replacement of Eurosceptic editors at the Mail and the Express. And in an instant both newspapers that had been Eurosceptic for decades are now miraculously Europhile. I find this development as disturbing as any I have seen. It suggests direct political interference in how the media is composed. Erdogan and Putin would be proud of May’s direct approach The stupidity of the political class that they think we would not notice these changes This country is dead. It’s moral base has been deliberately undermined and replaced by a political construct. Reply L Jones Posted February 24, 2019 at 3:06 pm | Permalink No, it’s not dead. We people who love our country are the same. It is honour and integrity among politicians that is dead. It was never very robust, but now it has ceased to be (present company excepted). | xxxxxy

24/2/2019 15:42 | Yes, repulsive is a good word for Minerve. I just wonder why he is so filled with hatred. Mid life crisis maybe, the time he discovers he's a nobody when he had dreams of being a somebody. Success eluded you, shame, but not unexpected. Little intelligence, no social skills, the odds were always against you. It doesn't seem to occur to you that in 10 years when many old people will be dead (and unfortunately many young and middle aged too), you'll likely be in old age too, wishing yourself dead no doubt, or at least wondering why you spent 24/7 posting on the internet. | shy tott |
