Yesterday only 1.4m shares buy back

Trading update on the 9th May! Wasn't expecting one so soon after the full year results. Popped it into my calendar.

The buybacks have kept the share price above 70p. In aggregate there were 24m buybacks at yesterday's close which has saved the company £794k in today's ex div. You would think that they would accelerate the buybacks until next results on 9 May, unless of course the results are going to be disappointing in which case, they might as well stop the buybacks and start again post results when the share price is lower.

Exdiv are red herrings, just the very small proportion of trading shares sold. Share price always recovers within a couple of weeks. I make a fortune out of "dividend hopping"

The buyback is passive: slow and steady and limited in volume. On its own it won't counteract the prevailing order flows at play. Today it's ex div, of course it will fall by 3.3p at the open. I didn't expect anything else!

If it falls more, we would have been better off selling BEFORE dividend and buying back after...

The share price will discount the DIVI, same as always. We have a forced buyer who will no doubt buy the discounted shares.

75p ex-div would be equivalent to 78.3p, a rise of another 5% or so.

Optimistic but not overly so, given the continued buy back. Regardless we've had a good run, I'm still holding as I don't think it's over yet.

I calculate a drop to circa 72p per share and recovery to 75p within 8 trading days if buybacks remain over 1m shares per day.

The "potentially" good thing about an ITV ex-dividend is that because of the buy back program its quite possible the price will get supported relatively well and (touchwood) bounce back within a few days (touchwood)....

Only time will tell..
(I'm holding through the date - taking the risk - as someone recently told me, what ever you decide will be wrong - so might as well decide to do nothing as anything else)

75.15 paid for 10 shares
