Hi Graham - was listening to an academic interviewed on Today R4 this morning.

He says that from the experience of others of this design being built the actual costs on these stations are now close to double the estimates.

Also the time scales are all running massively over plan so could be 20 years from now before it starts to feed the grid. And of course the strike price for the power from it is already hugely over the costs of renewables - which are still falling

As he observed the capacity will come on line far too late to have an impact on UK de-carbonise targets.

Story is that it is the Treasury that is looking to kill this on the basis of the economics. Better and faster returns from the renewables options - though there will still need to be guarantee-able base load capacity established - just not giga nuclear stations.

I wonder where the Rolls Royce SMRs fit in this - if you build them on existing/ decommissioning nuclear power sites it gets very close to 'plug and play' into the grid.

Yeah seen that, 10 years before they even think about generating electricity and that from day 1 of construction which is at least a couple of years away.

They need to use that cash to get onshore and offshore wind farms. use the excess electricity to produce Hydrogen which can then be used with a combination of gas to produce electricity during the day.

Why the FK the government can't see that is beyond me.

Orstead still have Gigastack and Oyster on the list.

Can’t beat someone taunting you when you have a good old illness caused by massive financial losses … money that they took off you .
Not sure if the knife can be twisted anymore actually … but leave it with me , I will try to come up with something that tops that 👍👍👍

Speculation that the new nuclear power station in going to be binned.

Save a fortune and a clear indicator for accelerating renewables.

Hydrogen will feature well in this as we need to capture and convert over-demand electricity generated and stop paying them to switch down the excess capacity.

I did say it was windy, we should be using the spare capacity to produce hydrogen. With more wind turbines going up won’t be long before we are generating 100% of the UK’s electricity.


The UK just set a landmark wind energy generation record.
