The Cure - The drowning man

Tuning: normal
Intro: Dm, A, Bb

Riff 1: [Dm, Em, Bb]

Dm A
She stands twelve feet above the flood
Bb
She stares
Alone
Across the water
Dm A
The loneliness grows and slowly
Bb
Fills her frozen body
Sliding downwards

Riff 2: [G, F#, Bb]
G F#
One by one her senses die
Bb
The memories fade
And leave her eyes
G F#
Still seeing worlds that never were
Bb Repeat Riff 1: [Dm, A,
x2
And one by one the bright birds leave her ...
Repeat Riff 2: [G, F#, Bb] x 2

Dm A
Starting at the violent sound
Bb
She tries to turn
But final
Noiseless
Dm A
Slips and strikes her soft dark head
Bb
The water bows
Receives her

G F# Bb
And drowns her at its ease
G F# Bb
Drowns her at its ease

Dm A
I would have left the world all bleeding
Bb
Could I only help you love
Dm A Bb
The fleeting shapes so many years ago

So young and beautiful and brave

G F#
Everything was true
Bb
It couldn't be a story
G F#
I wish it was all true
Bb
I wish it couldn't be a story

Dm
The words all left me
A
Lifeless
Hoping
Bb
Breathing like the drowning man
Dm A
Oh Fushia
You leave me
Bb G, F#, Bb
Breathing like the drowning man
Bb G, F#, Bb
Breathing like the drowning man

Perhaps he picked up the wrong guitar case.

I'm pretty sure he's not playing "give peace a chance"

speaking of which

can't leave out Phil Manzanera and the guitar sound on Avalon, Roxy Music

lol, total 80's meltdown, always teh same when the drink kicks in... but his guitar sound at the end of this, again, massive

Used to gig at a club in Bootle at the time, and it seemed everyone was there, Lotus Eaters, China Crisis etc, name drop, name drop

anyways there was some sorta guitarist for hire, really good player, forgot his name, but he took over from Gerry Kelly and I remember seeing him play this track, which is a scorcher!

Lotus Eaters, It Hurts

great guitar sound, it was louder live than it is on the recorded version, really cut through, total Phil Manzanera...

tbh, thought the Sundays were more Lotus Eaters than the Smiths

at the time, it was a toss up between Johnny Marr and Gerry Kelly, technique-wise

Lotus Eaters, When you look at boys (it's about his girlfriend, don't panic!)

one thing, on the Rough Trade docu, they dissed the Sundays as 'second-rate' Smiths

fine, fine I suppose, you wouldn't have one without the other (or Suede tbf), but c'mon everyone loves this song, and equally remembers this album and where they were, as much as This Charming Man 'exploding' into their heads, no?

Sundays, Can't Be Sure

all it will take is one iPhone advert, with this playing and everyone will go 'O yeh'

anyways, 3 songs I can play in E major tuning - EBEG#BE

all different!

Smiths, Headmaster Ritual (my fave Smiths track)

Faces, Hendrix's Angel cover

(yep, bamboo, love the Faces, rough trade!)

and then the Stones of course, Gimme Shelter

intro fiddly, but when you get into it, great to play! banging out teh one finger chords, the A E A E B great!

Went to "an evening with Rick Wakeman" recently, just him and a grand piano. he is very gifted and highly amusing. He didnt play this but he the piano on a lot Bowie's Hunky Dory is all down to Rick.
