Thanks Taffy

I particularly like being invested in a company that says this

We are developing breakthrough IP in technologies which will form the foundation of the fourth industrial revolution

:-)
Xylos- in a few years time about 10%of the Western Worlds population will probably have a diagnosis of diabetes, the market foenon- invasive blood glucose monitoring is immense

A very interesting discussion over the weekend on here. Piecing things together, I do remember at the AGM Drew Nelson talking about their technology being used to analyse blood sugar levels to avoid diabetes sufferers having to take frequent blood samples. Not sure about the size of that market but the medical people on here will no doubt confirm that diabetes is a growing concern, particularly in the USA. I sort of assumed that Drew was talking about specialist and expensive medical equipment but maybe not. Next I remember it being reported on here that IQE had a new mass market application coming through in the infra red field. I assumed at the time that it was a 'seeing in the dark' application but maybe that was an incorrect assumption. Now we are told in the Times article, highlighted by Sweenoid, that Apple are close to releasing a version of their watch which will monitor blood sugar levels using infra red technology. The 'worried well' as Sweenoid calls them may be quite keen to avoid diabetes and an easy way to check for signs of the problem might well be attractive to them. Healthcare is indeed a massively growing market. You can buy Blood pressure monitors in Lidl supermarkets for example. So, piecing things together - well I don't need to! Draw your own conclusions and think about another exciting and major income stream which might be about to come IQE's way.Xylos

the other thing to know is that as you get older an increase in bp is positive, esp for the over 70's. 140/90 is good these days, not a hyper warning.
not a lot of peeps know that and we still don't understand why
the recommended bp for younger peeps decreases with every longitudinal study. go figure.

and OTT ;-)
Oh..yes...depressing isn't it.
...watched "The 6th day" last night in which folks had perpetual life via clones and memory copied across at a cost of $1.2m, so outside scope of NHS.
Well, you didn't expect a serious answer did you. ;-)
To add to the depressing outlook for deferring "old age" humanity is now at a unique point in its history with a planet that is at capacity for food production for its increasing population.
Insect food, a staple in the East is being researched for the West I believe, and that change is is centred more around sensibilities than dietary factors.

Logans Run had the solution for ageing humanity, bumping you off at age 30.

Sweenoid:
You may be right, on put it away..but striving to be wise rather than complacent as we all typically are. My BP is OK but higher than ideal, so seeing if a few subtle changes can improve it.
TAM.. had to google...it isn't Telephone Answering Machine. ;-)

Good friend felt odd and feared he had small second stroke last week and having the BP monitor to hand was useful, with data passed on in 999 call - hopfefully he is now OK for continued stroke recovery. Without it he would likely be more reluctant to call 999 for an "odd" feeling.

The biggest market for bp monitors will always paradoxically be for the ... ‘worried well’ ;-)

Measure your bp once or twice, if it’s fine- put it away for 6 months and forget about it. Home monitors are great for diagnosis and management especially to eradicate the issue of ‘white coat hypertension’ and the inherent misdiagnosis that can cause, but people can obsess with home monitors, over- using them, especially when stressed- an increase in pulse rate and Blood pressure is an entirely normal physiological response in stress.

Apple KNOW, one of their largest target markets with a huge TAM and SAM are ...the hypochondriacal worried well.

Sweenoid: I'm 60, with similar age friends. Not sure if we are health conscious or paranoid or is health talk part of getting older.
They all have BP monitors and I have been persuaded this last week to try to keep salt intake below reccomended 6g a day.
Just bought a BP Monitor:
Omron M7 intelli, the "intelli" being bluetooth copying of data to phone app.
Only had it for 1 day, but believe the numbers will help me sustain a healthy diet over the long term, defer stroke/heart attack/dementia, so in macro picture, massive savings for NHS.
In terms of market size, we all want to stay healthy, so if consumer health monitoring is practical and cost effective (e.g. incorporated into phones/watches) it will be a massive sales driver, and most people happy to splash cash for health benefits, not just pay £1k to be trendy....says Mr cynical. ;-)

Remote or non invasive monitoring of blood glucose levels is a major goal of many companies, I think Apple will get there 1st, chiefly because it has limitless resources,to sort it out, and the route to market to monetise it. it would certainly make their iwatch sales sky- rocket, add in bp- blood pressure monitoring ( if it’s possible-surely. It’s going to be difficult) and you get the proverbial ‘golden fleece’ ofapplications.

Our CEO who is becoming rather deft at predictions has long talked about IQE’s infrared technology being used for glucose monitoring, could this happen in 2018? Of course onceApplegets thereeveryone elsewill follow.

Jabbing yourself to get blood for the regular testing needed,is a nuisance , it’s not painful, but it’s irritating and many hate it, there is simply a huge market here, and to be able to get ‘realtime’ monitoring Especially for insulin dependent diabetics would be marvellous, as for blood pressure monitoring which would have to be done viatheinfrared route, the market may be bigger?

Mid July- beginning week ofAugust shaping up to be very big for news flow, we get IQE’s trading statement and a raft of customers results and more importantly updates, which should be illuminating about demand especially for 3D sensing and our VCSEL business.

The article below by a Finisar shareholder is uncannily similar to my own interpretation about what’s going on there, he certainly shares my doubts that they can get ‘production ready and qualified this calendar year’ , he like me, is sceptical that they can crack the 6 inch VCSEL wafer problem that IQE sorted 2 years ago :-),it’s a well written article , it helps if you understand the 3D market, eitherways it’s an interesting read.

Components shortage for OEM's could be a real problem in the very near future.
Thus why IQE increasing production in its particular specialised area.
A strategy that will pay off for sure.
Then when component shortage occurs, it means component unit price rise will follow.
