British Airways holds talks with Chinese carriers

29th november

British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) has held talks with various Chinese carriers including Spring Airlines (9C, Shanghai Hongqiao), China Eastern Airlines (MU, Shanghai Hongqiao) and Sichuan Airlines (3U, Chengdu) as it looks to boost its presence in the world's second largest economy.

Speaking to Bloomberg newswire at the CAPA World Aviation Summit, IAG CEO, Willie Walsh, said British Airways had been "very late into China" due to relatively poor Sino-Anglo trade links and a lack of flight slots at its London Heathrow hub.

However, services to Chengdu, added after the purchase of bmi british midland (BD, East Midlands) freed up 42 slots, are exceeding expectations. "It is a huge market," he said. "There is a long list of cities in China we see with opportunities." In addition to Chengdu, British Airways' Chinese network is limited to Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong flights.

'Qantas seeks foreign ownership rule change'

Australian airline Qantas has backed a suggestion by Treasurer Joe Hockey that rules restricting foreign investment in the carrier should be changed.

Current rules limit total foreign holding of Qantas to 49%, with foreign airlines allowed to own just 35%.

Qantas has claimed the rules have hurt its growth, not least because its arch-rival Virgin has benefited from increased foreign investment.

Qantas has struggled recently amid rising competition and slowing demand.

Struggling carriers 'should fail', says British Airways' Walsh

27 November 2013

......Asked about growth to China, he said: "BA's ambition is to serve several destinations in China. There are a lot of cities where we see opportunities if we get a [UK] visa regime that is fit for purpose.

JPMorgan Cazenove has maintained its 'overweight' rating for IAG, easyJet and Ryanair, saying that it sees "respectable upside potential" for all three airline stocks on its new revised price targets.

"Turning towards 2014, we expect to see renewed investor confidence in the low-cost carrier (LCC) business model following 2013's Ryanair-induced skepticism, as well as continued momentum at IAG given Spanish contributions and improving Heathrow competition," the bank said.

BA to launch new London City routes

British Airways is launching routes from London City Airport to Rotterdam and Florence in March.

The national carrier will also add extra daily flights from the airport to Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Zurich.

It plans to add three new Embraer aircraft to its fleet at London City, with the first two 98-seat jets arriving in May. When the third plane arrives, 17 BA aircraft - a mix of Embraer 170s and 190s - will be based there.

BA's new Rotterdam route will run five times per week, while the service to Florence will operate four times weekly. Both services begin on March 31.

At the same time, the airline is also increasing capacity on its London City to Dusseldorf route by replacing the current Saab turboprop aircraft with an Embraer jet.

The net result is that, from March, BA will fly to 25 destinations direct from the Docklands airport.

Adam Carson, managing director of British Airways subsidiary BA CityFlyer, said: "The growth of London City Airport will allow us to further grow our own business there.
