Speaking to Bloomberg newswire at the CAPA World Aviation Summit, IAG CEO, Willie Walsh, said British Airways had been "very late into China" due to relatively poor Sino-Anglo trade links and a lack of flight slots at its London Heathrow hub. However, services to Chengdu, added after the purchase of bmi british midland (BD, East Midlands) freed up 42 slots, are exceeding expectations. "It is a huge market," he said. "There is a long list of cities in China we see with opportunities." The national carrier will also add extra daily flights from the airport to Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Zurich. It plans to add three new Embraer aircraft to its fleet at London City, with the first two 98-seat jets arriving in May. When the third plane arrives, 17 BA aircraft - a mix of Embraer 170s and 190s - will be based there. BA's new Rotterdam route will run five times per week, while the service to Florence will operate four times weekly. Both services begin on March 31. At the same time, the airline is also increasing capacity on its London City to Dusseldorf route by replacing the current Saab turboprop aircraft with an Embraer jet. The net result is that, from March, BA will fly to 25 destinations direct from the Docklands airport.
