03/11/2005 14:26 | Eutelsat withdraws IPO Posted: Fri, Oct 28, 2005, 5:22 AM ET (0922 GMT) European satellite operator Eutelsat has cancelled plans to perform an initial public offering (IPO) of stock, citing limited demand. Eutelsat had planned to sell up to $800 million in stock in the IPO, but announced earlier in the week that it had reduced the share price in an effort to stimulate interest in the IPO. However, the company was reportedly concerned that the share price could drop sharply after the IPO given a "volatile market environment" on the Euronext stock exchange in Paris, despite good performance by several other IPOs from satellite operators in recent months. Eutelsat had hoped to use the proceeds from the IPO to reduce its debt." | andrbea

01/11/2005 16:57 | Perhaps a bit late, but this appeared on Citywire 29th October and doesn't seem to have been posted: Hedge fund group Lansdowne, whose UK equity fund is run by ex-Merrill Lynch men Stuart Roden and Peter Davies, has added again to its holding in recently-floated satellite company Inmarsat. Lansdowne has upped its stake in the £1.1 billion company () from 5.4% to 6.05% since the beginning of October and now holds 27.6 million shares. Its share price has taken something of a hit recently as many of its early stage private equity backers have cashed in their stakes. It raced as high as 357p but has recently dipped below 300p. | alan@bj

01/11/2005 12:21 | kashmir quake So, what has been mantri Mir's singular contribution so far? He has managed to exhaust 300 minutes of precious talk-time on the Inmarsat phone in just two days, which has been allotted to each army brigade to be used over a month. While the minister was chewing up expensive talk-time, trucks carrying relief material were looted on the way to the army camp-those that did finally make it added to the chaos. The relief material was arbitrarily thrown into the crowd, leading to riot-like scenes. With nearly 1,500 people killed and nearly 1.5 lakh homeless in Kashmir's biggest natural disaster in history, the chaos over relief is an unfolding tragedy that threatens to claim more lives." | andrbea

01/11/2005 09:45 | We can console ourselves that at least it's ethical investing whilst the share price is this low. A ten-year e-schools' initiative in Africa, supported by Inmarsat, wins global award for being visionary 31-10-2005 - An ambitious e-learning initiative - supported by Inmarsat - that aims to transform 600,000 African schools has scooped the global Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year 2005 award. The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) e-schools' project focuses on providing information communication technology (ICT) solutions that will connect schools across Africa - primarily via satellite communications - to the internet. Revolutionising schools The initiative will be rolled out across Africa over the next ten years. Inmarsat will be donating 50 R-BGAN terminals and airtime to the project - enabling pupils and teachers alike to access the internet. The NEPAD project began to take shape in July 2001 when the heads of state of five countries (Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa) agreed to create sustainable programmes to integrate Africa into the global economy. Most promising project The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) - the US think tank which named NEPAD the Intelligent Community Visionary of the year in its awards - described the e-schools' Africa initiative as "one of the most promising projects" within the NEPAD programme. ICF chairman John Jung said: "The scope and intention of NEPAD's plans, the degree of success they have had in generating both financial support and the private sector's collaboration - as well as their understanding that satellite communications are key to broadband access in more and more areas of the world - led ICF's committee to acknowledge NEPAD in 2005." Global growth The awards are presented annually by the ICF to create awareness about the role broadband communication and ICT play in economic development, social cohesion and global growth. Inmarsat will be joining a consortium of private sector sponsors to help implement the e-schools' programme across the 16 participating African countries. Worthwhile initiative Inmarsat's regional director for the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, Samer Halawi, said: "Satellite communications are key to broadband access for many of these schools which are based in remote areas without a telecoms infrastructure." Samer added: "Inmarsat therefore has a vital role to play and we are pleased to be involved with such an exciting and worthwhile initiative."
