Yes they would......... next time round, shares generally go xd on a wednesday for some reason, whatever the company says about xd dates, hence the share price drop of 4p on Wednesday, reflecting the dividend payment of about 4p in October.

I didn't see this one posted, apologies if it has been posted before.

22-09-2005 - British and Portuguese airlines BMI and TAP are gearing up to provide a revolutionary in-flight mobile phone service for air travellers - via Inmarsat's forthcoming SwiftBroadband service.

OnAir, the partnership between aircraft manufacturer Airbus and aeronautical satcoms service provider Sita, will use Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband to deliver the innovative new service.

BMI and TAP's decision to offer in-flight calls represents an important building block in the development of a new market for Inmarsat.

OnAir estimates that the market for in-flight mobile telephone will be more than 700 million passengers by 2009.

The airlines are preparing to trial the service in late 2006 - BMI on an Airbus A320 and TAP on an Airbus A321.

BMI says its target market will be both business and leisure travellers to European destinations, with TAP focusing primarily on business passengers in Europe.

Inmarsat SwiftBroadband will be powered by the same new generation Inmarsat-4 (I-4) satellites that will deliver Inmarsat's pioneering Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) high-speed voice and data communications to enterprise users from the end of 2005.

The Swiftbroadband offering is a scaleable solution supporting a range of applications, including voice calls and text messages to passengers' own mobile phones, as well as broadband data connectivity for PDAs or laptops.

OnAir says the new offering opens up an exciting era for business travellers, enabling them to use their own GSM cellular and GPRS mobile phones.

The devastating effects of the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes have demonstrated the need for interoperable communications services for emergency responders and political officials," said Andy Sukawaty, Inmarsat CEO, in a statement.

"The 2 GHz band is uniquely suited to support broadband and multimedia MSS services and the development of an integrated, interoperable satellite/terrestrial network that can provide uninterrupted, high quality communications service in a time of crisis."

Some satellite connections continued to operate during the recent hurricanes after landline and cell phone services were knocked out.

Noting that it is a new entrant seeking a position in the 2 GHz band, Inmarsat said six of the eight companies who were awarded space in the band in 2001 have since forfeited their authorization.

Inmarsat operates a global fleet of MSS satellites and is finishing its $1.5 billion Inmarsat-4 satellite network project for the 2 GHz band. The firm said it is working with "leading technology" partners to develop the system and observed that it has been providing communications support for government, military and public safety units for more than 20 years.

Inmarsat Files Petition Requesting Access to 2 GHz Broadband Wireless Spectrum

9/28/05 - Global satellite communications provider Inmarsat announced that it has filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking authorization to provide Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) by 2010 using a spacecraft that will operate in the 2 GHz band. The proposed spacecraft is part of Inmarsat's planned next generation global system which will be focused on providing global voice, data and multimedia MSS offerings using the 2 GHz band and enabling the establishment or restoration of a communications network in times of crisis.
"Inmarsat services on the 2 GHz band will enhance our role as a provider of reliable, safety-related government and commercial communications services," said Andy Sukawaty, CEO of Inmarsat. "The devastating effects of the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes have demonstrated the need for interoperable communications services for emergency responders and political officials. The 2 GHz band will allow Inmarsat to continue its long legacy of supporting the communications needs of the U.S. military, civil defense and all agencies associated with homeland security."

In 2001, the FCC authorized eight companies to use the 2 GHz band for MSS with the provision that certain satellite construction milestones be met. Six of the eight companies have since forfeited their authorizations. Inmarsat has applied for the unused spectrum to meet the expectation of significantly increased demand for new multimedia and emerging broadband satellite services and to provide first responders with reliable communications capabilities when a terrestrial network has been disabled. As a new entrant in this band, Inmarsat will enhance competition and improve the prospects for actually getting this spectrum resource into service for the benefit of the American public.

"Hurricane Katrina provided another stark reminder of the need for reliable communications capabilities during a disaster where terrestrial and cellular services had proven unreliable during extreme emergencies," said Andrew Sukawaty, Chairman and CEO of Inmarsat. "We are deploying the Inmarsat network with a focus towards ensuring that first responders and emergency workers have all the communications resources they need."
Inmarsat's communications services were instrumental in helping the Department of Defense, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Coast Guard, the National Guard and other organizations coordinate relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina last month. At peak, demand for Inmarsat services, via GAN terminals, tripled as a result of the natural disaster.

Initially branded as Regional BGAN, access to the service was confined to a coverage area of about 99 countries. Following the successful migration of the service to the new Inmarsat-4 (I-4) satellite, R-BGAN can now be used in a significantly larger coverage area. The footprint of R-BGAN now covers Europe, the whole of Africa, the Middle East, most of Asia Pacific and Western Australia, adding nearly 50 countries to the coverage area and extending the service to a total of 150 countries.

Since its launch in the Middle East and Africa, R-BGAN has not only successfully penetrated the region, it has benefited regional customers by offering connectivity anywhere at anytime, especially corporate executives and members of the media who tend to frequently be on the move. As of the end of July 2005, the majority of R-BGAN users have now migrated onto the Inmarsat-4 based service.

The migration also coincides with new pricing packages being offered by Inmarsat's R-BGAN distributors2, which can provide significant reductions in data charges by about 40%. R-BGAN is charged by the amount of data sent and received, and users can now access a range of different pricing structures – from monthly megabyte allowances, to more flexible options that spread usage over a preferred period.

R-BGAN becomes today the first operational BGAN terminal, and when the full service is launched near the end of the year, end-users across the globe will witness the birth of "Broadband for a Mobile Planet".

It's a dog eat dog world out there. Once the satellites have been launched then the costs are minimal and the revnues are extremely attractive. Hence the dividend being paid out by Inmarsat. There will certainly be sector consolidation. Don't forget that Telenor holds 10% of Inmarsat and increased it's stake just after flotation. There will will also be vertical integration as companies look to enhance their competitive advantages.
