13/7/2005 16:34 | SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- CBS Digital Media and CBS News said Tuesday that they would launch a 24-hour digital news network as part of a major expansion of CBSNews.com. Plans for the on-demand broadband network call for a blog called "Public Eye" that will offer "greater openness and transparency into the newsgathering process." It's scheduled to appear by late summer. The launch also includes The Eye Box, a video player featured on the CBSNews.com homepage that will make available more than 25,000 clips and video that has yet to be seen on the television network, CBS said. I know it doesn't seem related, but just to give a feel for how quickly wireless broadband is developing. | whipround

13/7/2005 09:36 | Broadband trailblazer Connexion by Boeing now has four airlines offering service, with another four in the pipe. Chief competitor Inmarsat is due to launch its first broadband satellite this spring, has been named as the Airbus solution of choice, and is hearing from its equipment and service community that the airlines are queuing up for what they have to offer. Having feasted heartily on the failure of in-flight phone over the years, the vultures were looking forward to tucking into onboard cell phone by way of dessert. No such luck: providers ARINC/Telenor and OnAir are sure they've cracked the technical problem and are knuckling down realistically to the hard work of winning the approval of the airworthiness and national telecoms authorities. 10/7/2005 10:31 | For information According to the prospectus Inmarsat expects to pay a dividend of US$25m in Oct 2005 and US$50m in May 2006 and there were 473.572m shares in issue at the date of the prospectus. If flotation had occured on Jan 1 2005 the Group states that it would have expected to have paid out US$117m in dividends for 2005. At this latter figure the payout would have been IN EXCESS of the stated policy of aiming to pay out at least half of normalised "free cash flow". Dividends will be payable in either US dollars or sterling. My calculator indicates that the first two dividends will approximate to just over 9p a share giving a current net yield of about 2.8% net (3.1% gross). The higher yield figures must be based on the whole year 2005 estimate where my calculator indicates a current 4.4% net yield (4.9% gross). | ![]() ygor705
