I think possibly a bid might materialise on Monday ,as the highest percentage of takover bids are announced on Mondays and the lowest amount of bids on Friday's.
But then again what if the bidders are awaiting any possible new technology advancements in Apple's new phone??? And make there bids accordingly
If Apple is bluffing about designing its own chips for its own hardware just to buy imagination cheaply, then a massive EU wide investigation into its treatment of imagination would cost it dearly and deservedly so. I do believe it will bid probably after cayon bridges gets over any regularly hurdles for imagination,
Just in case it can still steal imagination cheaper than its possible last indicative offer.please let their be a bidding war , and at least make apple pay the full price for imaginations full turnover.

Just got a feeling one of the Sunday Papers will reveal the details. And the official announcement will be first thing Monday.

...Just a feeling.

timbob I can't see MTK being interested. They're so interested in saving 5-10c a chip they used MALI for years rather than pay IMG. Why they would now cough up £500m for something they don't need - and certainly don't need to bring inhouse - is a bit of a mystery. I'm all for a bit of a bid feeding frenzy though.

Someone lit the blue touchpaper which at the moment appears to have gone out. Do you:

a. Move in carefully to examine it

or

b. Keep your distance in case it explodes in your face?

Let's not forget there may well be others lurking in the background whom I think would be interested in buying IMG, these could include: Samsung, Mediatek, HiSilicon (Huawei), Cadence and Synopsis to name but a few. Personally I think all of these companies would be interested in purchasing the entire group.

That's what I've been hoping for D

They also get Omnishield IP included in the deal as well as the core of choice for a bunch of modems which is a market area Intel are also quite interested in.

Mobileye are completely TIED to MIPS for their EYEQ4 AND 5 itinerations extending to 2020
I know they are now part of Intel, would it be cost effective for them to snap up MIPS , it would be a drop in the ocean for them, unlikely but IMG's royalties there are assured for at least 3 years,
Wouldn't it be incredibly expensive for them to replace the MIPS IP for 'flavours' of EYEQbeyond 5 - surely there is a case for Intel to at least taking MIPS for that reason alone

Ready to be shot down

There again.... RAMBUS does have a long history of patent litigation and knows its way around the courts. It has been moderately successful at this. You know what.... I might be tempted to let them have IMG at a discount on the condition that they hammer Appl in the courts. :-)

Hard work to see Rambus getting their act together to put together a full English let alone a bid and SoftBank already have ARM so IMG would be a lot of replication without the Apple business surely.

Hopefully Canyon will bid for it all, or the CBs will call Martin Ashton to see if he can persuade Intel to take MIPS, so they can have the rest.

How are CEVA doing these days ? EDIT - nah, they're not coming in for anything.

I'm not even contemplating the Golden Ticket option.

So according to the Bloomberg article the potential bidders are:
- Canyon Bridge (loads of cash)
- Softbank (inc. ARM) (loads of cash)
- RAMBUS (market cap 1.4 billion USD)

RAMBUS seems directionless as a business and doesn't know if it wants to buy another business or sell itself! I wouldn't see view them as a good move for IMG.... they seem to just be after the patents.

I used to 'love' this stock - literally
Now, I really don't care who wants what ,As long as I make an earner on my punt.

Gee, how times and attitudes change!?

Isn't it a little f'ing stupid that literally anyone can take any sort of architectural license, getting all sorts of insight into every facet of the IP (apart from other people's implementations I suppose) yet for some reason the Yanks don't like someone buying the actual business even if that means it goes bust ? So they'd rather risk a business close and lose 100's if not 1,000's of jobs. They're a funny bunch. Especially considering MIPS isn't even a US company....

The other spin is that maybe Canyon just don't want MIPS !

I'm sure there's $50-60m of easy sale money to someone out there for MIPS if any bidder doesn't want the whole shebang.

That should cause a further spike in the morning. I suppose that it is just possible that Canyon Bridge would buy everything except MIPS and that someone else would buy MIPS but I can't imagine too many bidders queing up to buy MIPS on its own. To avoid any controversy in the current climate in the States they would probably also have to be USA companies. Intel/MobileEye?? I would have thought it very unlikely! Ceva? They are probably not cash rich enough to want to risk another go.

Edit: Other option I suppose is just to close the USA office (that would be an ironic fail for the US attempts to prevent their businesses from being taken over by foreign buyers! :-). I wonder what proportion of MIPS staff now reside in the USA versus other offices?

Shorter decides to quickly bale out to the tune of 1m shares could easily explain today's spike with no further bid news required. There would still be 15.5m more shorted shares to be bought back. If so should get confirmation in a day or two.
