Re. take over.

Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong side of the pond for potential buyers.

Someone like Serica might perhaps want to diversify away from the North Sea, and that cash pile really does need deploying somehow. They also have the exact competency required to get Serenity developed if that is indeed possible.

This stock has seen a huge run up. Nothing goes up in a straight line. A period of consolidation should not surprise us. With Biden apparently still hell bent on making life difficult and expensive for the US hyrdrocarbons industry, I am happy to have some Canadian exposure. Windfall taxes (or just 'more taxation's all its many guises, everywhere) is coming, but with luck the Canadians will see the sense in staying half a step behind so as to maintain the competitiveness of their O and G. With the way the carbon wind is blowing, it is the tar sand producers which I would be most concerned for.

The cheaper it gets the more likely a take over ...

I have been puzzling as to who might be want to gobble this up but cannot come to any conclusions. Those who can easily afford it are unlikely to be interested whereas those who might well be interested e.g. Cardinal would have to do a large fund raise to pull it off.

Is there a reason this keeps falling? I have some money to invest but will wait a while longer.

You would also get fierce push back to a proposed Canadian WFT from the Albertan premier, Danielle Smith (see article below).

I understand she has previously talked about Albertan sovereignty in certain areas which touches upon the division of powers between Ottawa and Alberta in the Canadian federal / provincial constitution.

Alberta royalties are somewhat like a windfall tax. The royalty rate increases with the oil price.

That doesn't put any money in Trudeau's pocket though.

I am really not sure how a federal tax would work. The only companies which actually pay tax are the big four oil sands players (CNQ, SU, IMO, CVE) everyone else always has tax pools.

Thanks moonshot for that. But the cynic in me would argue that her words suggest that they are considering one but have not yet implemented it. How many times in the last couple of years have we heard "the government has no plans to....." and then seen a U-turn very shortly after? It's what's known as "nudge theory" to prepare people for something.

"I feel there's a very strong chance Trudeau will try for a windfall tax."

Extracts from Article published on 5 November states that the Ottawa govt is not considering the introduction of a WFT (see below):

"Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is standing by her government’s decision not to impose a windfall tax on oil and gas companies."

"In an interview with CTV’s Question Period with Joyce Napier, airing Sunday, Freeland said it’s [a WFT]not something the government is considering at this time."

"Freeland instead mentioned the two per cent tax on share buybacks by large corporations, a new measure included in the economic statement, which she said is “the right measure to ensure fairness, but also crucially to create the right incentives for Canada's biggest companies, very much including our oil and gas companies.”

People are fixated on never selling at a loss basem. I've always thought that's a mistake. If you see better opportunity elsewhere it sometimes makes sense to sell one to buy another. As the old adage goes "would you buy more at the current price?". If the answer is no then selling what you currently hold is worth consideration.Fwiw I sold a few this morning to buy some DEC. Also prefer spreading geographical risk a bit as I feel there's a very strong chance Trudeau will try for a windfall tax.

A government reflects the people it governs, you get what you deserve, simple as that. Why is it most unemployed Brits refuse to pick fruit and veg in the fields so we need to employ foreigners, why have Brit workers been labelled the laziest in Europe? Why do you see people on TV complaining about the cost of heating their homes, wearing just a T-shirt?
This is a dysfunctional country many of whom enjoy living off the charity of hard working people. I could go on but politicians appear to have given up because anyone who steps slightly out of line faces the wrath of political correctness and do-gooders who practise a lack of free speech, except their own version, and force it on others. In other words politicians have lost the battle against brain-washing. And so the vacuum is filled by criminals such as the drug and people smugglers.
