Most (if not all) distilleries use local natural spring water in the process. If for example the local spring water used at one distillery had been naturally filtered through peat bog (like Islay) then you can expect the smokey undertones from the peat to be prominent in the final flavour. | damac | |

09/1/2020 12:34 | Gtaval1 Adding just one small drop of water to a single malt changes the taste, complexity and aroma of that malt. Going back to the Malt Whisky Society as an explanation on this, when you visit any venue you are handed what is called the 'Bar Bible' which contains the tasting notes for all malts they currently have in stock. For each malt, they provide you with tasting notes for both scenarios, with and without water, explaining to you what you should expect to taste and smell depending on how you choose to drink it. 09/1/2020 12:32 | I bottled a hogs head of Springbank in 2017 and one of the participants was in America, so his bottles could not be cask strength but a set strength (and a different size) for import. I asked Springbank how they adjusted it to correct alcohol spec and the response was with water. Talking of water I just bought a 1 litre bottle of fancy stuff at £1.09 so at 159litres in a bbl thats £173/bbl--perhaps we are selling the wrong stuff and water more sustainable than oil! | flyinghorse1 | |

09/1/2020 12:20 | For anyone that likes single malts I would thoroughly recommend membership of the Scottish Malt Whisky Society. In addition to the 3 venues in Scotland they also have a venue in London. You are able to visit these venues when you want (subject to opening hours obviously) and on each visit as a member you receive 3 drams of your choice free. They also do regular tasting sessions at these venues. Well worth it for access to exclusive (single run) malts which you can buy by the bottle if still available and which you will never find on any off license or supermarket shelf. hxxps://www.smws.com | damac | |

Currently have 4 bottles of whisky open Aberlour Double Cask 16 yo } ……… Old Pulteney Maritime 18 yo} Hudson Manhattan Rye made in New York Kavalan Solist - single malt from Taiwan of all places The Rye is outclassed by the others but it was a meaningful Christmas present from someone special so I'm really enjoying it. The Aberlour is really delicious. The Pulteney is absolutely wonderful. Complex, smooth, ever changing. The Kavalan is transcendental. To my amazement it is in a different league from the others above. I would not have believed it. Nor does anybody I've shared it with. Taiwanese whisky? I've been accused of switching bottles. The IWSC (International Wines & Spirits Challenge) - which runs large scale blind tastings awarded it 98/100 and I reckon they were being a bit mean at that. I've only just noticed that it is 59.4% proof!!! Maybe that has something to do with its magical qualities. I've always understood that single malts benefit from the addition of a very small amount of good quality water - ie not tap. Sometimes I follow that advice. Sometimes I don't. What I did find rather teeth clenching was being asked for one of the scotches on ice this Christmas. But I managed not to flinch and took it on the chin. | tournesol | |
