It doesn't sit well when other companies are paying dividends and many of 'Joe Public' find the additional income really useful in times such as these. I understand that the BoE/HMG are calling in the 'favour' from 2008 but not all banks needed capital during that time - whilst HSBC had access to increased liquidity in 2008 it did not need to call on this as it had ample reserves. That said, I guess the banks don't want to be seen paying divi's, then calling for capital if things turned really bad. In 2008, most banks acted foolishly, due to the investment banking arms (hence the Retail splits we now see) but the BoE, Govt and FSA also behaved irresponsibly before and during those times so the banks weren't the only pariahs. As we've all got time on our hands, I'd recommend a book called Fools Gold by Gillian Tett - tells the whole global story from start to finish, and it's an amazing read.

Although I'm appalled at the way in which the BOE has behaved and even more so by the limp d1ck response by the shackled, gimp mask wearing Banks, I continue to drip feed buys into HSBA. My last (and lowest) was at 396p with my highest (when I commenced building my stake) at 588p.

This year for them will be a washout but in the absence of dividends, I'm able to buy at well below the price they would normally be and hence am probably about par fiscally.

Next year I think we'll see a special dividend as a reward and taking that into account, I should have benefitted medium term from this shambles.

With no dividend I can't see anything other than a slow drift Southwards especially with today's downgrade & likely further general market falls

Banks are basically bust, the stress tests that they passed were nowhere near as devastating as the crisis we are in now....look at the actions of governments round the world, unlimited money to banks to keep them afloat.

doesn't matter where they are...

Chart looks atrocious here. Anyone buying now is catching the falling knife. There is no support foundations.

HSBC needs to teach BoE a lesson and move HQ no doubt on that. This event is massive game changer and HMG are completely stupid in thinking there is no consequences from their interference

I had a great plan to build a long term stake in a bank. HSBC was my choice as I thought was most independence of BoE interference and was one of the few banks surviving well in 2008. Since yesterday I was proven wrong with astronomical interference from BoE. I sold my stake and transferred to more solid ground with no expected interference possible. Today they are up several % and HSBC are down and will continue that trend.

Already listed in HK dollars isnt it?

Why would you want it to delist in UK?

It becomes a Chinese bank if they do that...plenty of influential shareholders wouldn't be happy with that I would guess

It certainly makes sense to move to HK with 80% of its business there. good for the share price if they did as well.
