I'm fortunate that my RDSB & IMB combined pay me over £35k pa in dividends, so can afford a little drop off from my other yielders.

Just got this communication (I added the ps) from HSBC:

The interest rate on your savings accounts is decreasing

Hello Mr Spud,

We take a number of factors into consideration when reviewing our products, including market conditions and the Bank of England Base Rate.

As a result of the Bank of England's decision to reduce the Base Rate from 0.75% to 0.10% this March, we're reducing the interest rate on some of our savings accounts.

Full details of our new rates and when they are effective from are listed below. You can find the name of your HSBC savings accounts on your statement, or by visiting Online Banking or our Mobile Banking app.

PS We also won't be paying your dividends this year either!

Happy Easter from all at HSBC!!

If the Dividend is gone, i expect a stop to any type of bonus for all staff across the board, and salary's cut, for senior management. If shareholders are punished so should the executive management team.

ill be fuming if they still are getting any type of bonuses.

I accept they were under pressure but that means in times of crisis they cannot manage as decisions are taken at government levels. How is this an investment case in such out of control conditions ? For sure the BOE cannot think the bank will loan to basket case businesses that need 100 yrs to pay off their loans. This only puts us back into financial crisis. This decision makes no business or economic sense. As I said will only accelerate the recession and kill the Stockmarket !

I think politically they didn't have much choice. The BoE dictat hints to an impending UK kleptocracy which I think has really spooked the horses, but I hope hsbc will make it crystal clear to the government that they will not be propping up doomed businesses, and will move abroad if they try to push them down that road.

They had no choice. They are a U.K. Bank and not following advice from PRA would have been foolish

If they have any honour and respect for their shareholders, especially after DECLARING the dividend, they should pay it once this crisis is over....

I think HSBC made absolutely the wrong decision here. No government in a capitalist country can decide how they run their business. This bank is one of the few who managed through the great financial depression without stopping dividends. This will only put more fuel on the fire for the current down turn and recession. Absolutely madness though I only own a small part of my portfolio in HSBC. Was growing a future investment stake as I thought it was one of the most robust but now this event changes everything !

HSBC said plenty of capital, gov must have told PRA tell banks don't pay"

Presumably it's a replay of the Financial Crisis where ALL banks, regardless of capital buffers, were told to take govt bailout money.

Why, prevent a run on the banking system(Money would be pulled swiftly from the weaker banks, and deposited with the visibly stronger)

This way they all suspend their divi so the investor is none the wiser.

Indisputable fact though is:
HSBC is the strongest global bank.

If HSBC is in trouble, barclays, Lloyds, StanChart, RBS are all toast.

All we need is for shell and BP to cut/stop their dividends then the market can really crash? Are the government thick or what?
