23/8/2020 09:15 | Erbil-Baghdad Success to Resolve Disputes Important for US: KRG Official BasNews 2020/08/23 - 00:33 Kurdistan ERBIL - If Erbil and Baghdad succeed in resolving the remaining disputes between the two sides, that would be important for the US, a senior official of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has argued. Head of Department of Foreign Relations Safeen Dizayee revealed to BasNews that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in an official letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, has reiterated Kurdistan Region's support to the strategic dialogue between Iraq and the US as well as Erbil's readiness to resolve its disputes with Baghdad, calling on Washington to play a role in this regard. Dizayee noted that as long as the country is working on a strategic agreement with the US, the situation in the country should be normalized and that "this is why the Kurdistan Region would be an important part of the agreement, especially in terms of fighting against Daesh." Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi is in Washington for the second round of the strategic dialogue between the two countries. He met with President Donald Trump for talks on various topics. | beernut

22/8/2020 19:36 | ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources announced that, for the third year in a row, Iran has cut off the flow of two major rivers on which the autonomous region of Iraq depends as part of its regular water supply. The ministry said in a statement that, in mid-August, Iran completely blocked the waters of both the Sirwan and Lower Zab rivers upstream from the border between the two. “It’s been five days since Iran completely cut off the rivers that are pouring into the region,” Akram Mohammed, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Director for Dams and Water Resources, told Kurdistan 24. Mohammed explained that farmers in Ranya district and others depending on the Darandikhan water route will face the most drastic consequences. If Iran continues to restrict water flow, he warned, it will have a devastating long-term effect on agriculture in those areas. “The decision will also affect the Halabja (province) water project, for which most of its farmers are depending on that water for farming and orchard keeping. Furthermore, it will cause the death of many fish farms and smaller rivers (fed from the Sirwan and Lower Zab rivers) along the way.” Mohammed added, “We have spoken with the Iranian Consul-General in Kurdistan, and the region’s minister of agriculture also spoke with deputy minister of Iran’s agriculture, expressing their concern regarding the decision.” Mohammed stated that the federal Iraqi government has been notified that this is a “matter of sovereignty” and that Baghdad needs to solve it using established diplomatic channels. On Tuesday, Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement that cutting off the two rivers violates all international norms and laws, noting that the water belongs to both the Iraqi and Iranian peoples, not just one country. Also known as the Little Zab, the Lower Zab River originates in Iran and joins the Tigris just south of al-Zab in the Kurdistan Region. The river is approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) long and drains an area of about 22,000 square kilometers (8,500 square miles). In addition to farming, Kurdistan uses water from the Lower Zab to produce electricity. Editing by John J. Catherine | nestoframpers

22/8/2020 10:18 | US backs Iraqi progress on budget deal with Kurdistan Region The Trump administration says it supports Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi's progress so far in working out a budget agreement with the Kurdistan Region. al-monitor SHWAN MOHAMMED/AFP via Getty Images. BY ALI MAMOURI Aug 21, 2020 The Trump administration is backing Iraqi Prime MInister Mustafa al-Kadhimi's efforts to urgently conclude a budget deal with Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). "I urged Baghdad to clinch a budget deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government," said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at a press conference Aug. 20 following a meeting in Washington with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein. Iraq's Ministry of Finance announced Aug. 17 that Baghdad and Erbil had reached an agreement on some of the long-standing disputes between Baghdad and Erbil over the latter's share of the federal budget. According to the terms so far, Baghdad will pay 320 billion dinars ($268 million) to Erbil monthly as a goodwill gesture, and Erbil in return promises to continue the ongoing negotiations with Baghdad over oil exports from the Kurdistan regional territory and to hand over control of the border crossings to Baghdad. Kurdistan exports 450,000 barrels of oil through Turkey’s Ceyhan pipeline every day. According to previous agreements, 250,000 barrels should go to Baghdad and the rest should go to the KRG budget. However, the Kurdistan Region has not been paying Baghdad its share until now. Out of Iraq's 22 land border crossings, five are located in the Kurdistan Region and are therefore not under the control of the federal government. They include Haji Omeran, Parviz Khan, Ibrahim Khalil, Faysh Khabur and Bashmaq, as well as the main airports in Erbil and Sulaimaniyah. There are also some other unofficial border crossings from the Kurdistan Region into Iran and Turkey. Read more: hxxps://www.al-monit | beernut
