US Troops Replace Iraqi Shi’ite Militias in Kirkuk’s K1 Base
ERBIL — US military in Iraq has notified the Iraqi troops and Shi’ite militias to leave K1 military base in Kirkuk where the US troops are being stationed, a Kurdish commander said.

K1 military base is known as a strategic base used by the US army between 2003 and 2014. It was later under the control of Kurdish Peshmerga forces until October 2017 when the Iraqi army and Hashd al-Shaabi militias overran the Peshmerga position and stationed at the base.

Peshmerga commander Nouri Hama Ali revealed on Monday that a significant number of US troops had arrived at K1, and that the Iraqi army and Shi’ite militias were notified to leave soon, as reported by KDP official website.

He pointed out that part of the troops were moved from Syria to K1, and the rest came from Anbar province in west of Iraq.

However, according to Ali, the goal of the new deployment is not clear yet.

Ali explained that major developments pertaining to the return of the Kurdish forces to Kirkuk is now expected to take place with the US forces easing the tensions through their presence.
