It could be that we have landed a new species of Coronavirus on this board which has escaped from some GSK lab .

Watford Massive demand destruction and probably no dividend this year. Carrying excessive debt so balance sheet not robust. Apart from that not much is wrong.

Watfordhornet, See the Federal Reserve announcement at noon our time. I haven't read in detail but journos are describing it as unlimited QE.

Wow - bought at 1400p earlier so guess that explains the drop. A huge swing for a relatively defensive stockAny idea why?

Most costs also denominated in dollars. Lower STG offers some support but nothing even remotely close to the impact of collapse in world economy.

TM - I have posted before - don't forget where net income lies and where dividends are paid. IE is the money in the right place? (True for most global groups).

Of course. However, a 10% improvement in the dollar value of sales (much of GSK's income is in USD), significantly improves the company's bottom line and makes the dividend more affordable and hence more sustainable.

TraderMichael. Do not understand your comment about the dollar/pound exchange rate in connection with the dividend. OK, GSK's bottom line might improve in the short to medium term due to a lower sterling rate as a large percentage of the company's income is in dollars. However, GSK declares its dividend in sterling from the outset unlike some other multinational companies such as HSBC which declares in dollars. In the latter case if the dollar/sterling rate moves between the declaration date and the payment date, then the actual sterling amount received will similarly move up or down. That does not apply to GSK's dividends.

The world economy is contracting at an unprecedented rate. No dividend is safe, defensive or non defensive.

And GBP 1.0 = USD 1.16 (there's an extra 10% just from the exchange rate) ….. ;0)

All I can say is, in times like this, I am glad we have a diverse company. The staples side surely must be going all guns as people rush to stockup on: Lemsips Aquafresh Calpol Horlicks Panadol Sensodyne Tums etc etc And Nicorette/Nicotinell

You, like a minority of others are a prophet of doom. The dividend is safe. Sales of pharmaceuticals and vaccines are always needed (whatever the economic/social/political climate), which is why GSK is a defensive stock.
