16/4/2013 16:41 | Hi ttnyrp, I agree that the political will is there to permit the extention of the mine and believe that there will be a positive outcome to the planning process. What worries me is the willingness of the judicary to intervene, and the present and historical weakness of planning decisions in NI leading to further JR's and uncertainty. The fact that Natural Heritage feels unable to provide a comment on this application is another factor. They have given me the impression that there is no way any new extractive industry can be permitted in the catchment areas of the local rivers and their tributaries, without breaking environmental laws. This leaves the future of all mining in NI in a very precarious position, and what is one of the richest and most diverse mineralised areas in the UK with few options regarding future exploitation. | bamboo2
16/4/2013 10:57 | Hi Bamboo, the only message I take from the A5 decision is one we already know, namely that all i's need to be dotted and all t's crossed. From my occasional exchanges with Roland that figures high on the list of why this is taking so long. I personally will be very surprised if there's any political desire remaining to refuse permission, the legal challenges to us and the A5 seem to rest on not carrying out all the relevant planning assessments and/or abiding by environmental directives. Do you see it differently to that? I'd probably agree with you that taking a chunk of physical seems a good idea currently. | ttnyrp
16/4/2013 09:25 | Fwiw, following the drop in the gold price and A5 decision [and the message that gives out], i have reduced my holding here and will be adding physical. Good luck all. | bamboo2

18/3/2013 13:47 | I think you will find the one who wanted to move to Scotland has moved to Scotland. Of the other two, one who is complaining has strong links to Gerry Adams, the other is just another nasty little Scotsman!! | troggy1969
18/3/2013 11:53 | The Count, I know what you mean, but think that remark should be re-phrased, as the troubles are still a very recent memory for some. I'm sure the person involved was known to be planning to move away to Scotland at some point soon in any case. | bamboo2

18/3/2013 10:55 | BD, one of the handful of objectors, is now trying to point the finger at the potential for metal leaching/acid rock drainage problems if our excess rock is sold for use as aggregate. He doen't seem to understand that this is simply not a problem with our geology. Is it time for Roland to consider making him an offer to buy his property? | bamboo2
13/3/2013 09:22 | The saga of the A5 legal action continues. This is important to Galantas because while the Judge has pushed aside most of the action groups complaints, he has found problems with a missing Habitat Directive connected to the road scheme. I think this is a document that should have been delivered by Natural Heritage as part of the original PP for the road scheme. This is the same department that has been unable to understand our EIA. It looks as if Natural Heritage needs to start taking a more pro-active part in planning applications. They come across as unable to take important or controversial decisions and seemingly prefer to avoid any risk of being seen as wrong by 'covering their backs'. This leaves the Planning Dept with no alternative but to continue without their input resulting in weaknesses in the decision process. Alex Attwood should take his reorganisation plans further and look very closely at the calibre of the staff at Natural Heritage. [imo, apols if I have read this situation incorrectly.] | bamboo2

03/3/2013 18:49 | Dalradian looking to extend their exploration, from 14-02-13, Goldmine jobs boost hinges on planners' view Thursday, 14 February 2013 A goldmine company is seeking permission to initiate an underground exploration project at its Curraghinalt site near Gortin - a move that could generate over 50 new jobs. The announcement was made at a public information event held at the OwenKillew Community Centre in the village, at which over 50 people were present. Dalradian Gold will submit its application, which purports to extend the exploration site's existing adit (currently 700 metres) by 2,000 metres, on Monday next. Should Dalradian be given the green light, it is expected that the current workforce will increase from 33 to 84 within 12 months. Ed Kelleher, managing director of Dalradian Gold, stressed that all estimations were contingent upon planning approval and that it could be between nine and 18 months before a decision is made. Mr Kelleher also told audience members that 6,000 m3 of waste rock, a result of the planned exploration, would not be sold to the Department of Regional Development (DRD) for use in the impending A5 Western Transport Corridor project. He also moved to allay fears that his company would seek to withdraw from the Gortin site, after the exploration project was complete. 'Long haul' "We are in this for the long haul and we want to see this project out to the end. We have absolutely no intention of leaving. We have invested a huge amount of time and money here and we have never considered leaving," said Mr Kelleher. He informed those present that the exploration work was required to verify the findings of their Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA). The PEA, carried out to help determine a mine's viability, states that the total Life of Mine (LOM) spend - 15 years - could potentially cost $302 million (Canadian dollars). The assessment revealed that a 1,700 tonne-per-day underground operation would produce 145,000 ounces of gold annually, at operating costs of around $532 per ounce. An ounce of gold currently retails at between £1,100 and £1,200. Also, It is expected that 2.2 million ounces of gold would be produced during the mine's lifetime, with an average mined grade of 8.1 grammes per tonne. The recent findings caused Dalradian Gold's share price to increase by 103%. Dalradian completed 9,500 metres worth of drilling in the second half of 2012, and total exploration efforts at Curraghinalt are expected to exceed 50,000 metres by the end of 2013. Residents were promised continued updates on the progress of the exploration project and invited to contact Dalradian for any further queries they might have. | bamboo2
28/2/2013 23:00 | Tonight it looks like detail on roads service issues is resolved. So we're just waiting for the hippies at Natural Heritage to wise up. Edit, there are a few conditions from Roads Service, but they are minor. eg Keep roads surface repaired and clean. Drivers to wear matching socks etc | bamboo2
27/2/2013 16:55 | Obviously worried that their own hotel would suffer in the event of the plans going ahead. Just going to prove that there is always another agenda. Good news for golfers and good news for job seekers. And will it affect the Causeway's status as a world heritage site? Of course not but I suspect a lot more people will go and visit it if they can get a round of golf in at the same time. | nat hart
27/2/2013 16:20 | Attwood and the DOE in NI have done well to defeat this JR from the National Trust. I see this as a sign they are getting their act together... The National Trust has lost a legal attempt to block construction of a £100m golf resort and hotel near the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim. The National Trust opposed the development because of its proximity to the Unesco world heritage site. The trust brought a judicial review after Environment Minister Alex Attwood granted planning permission. However, a High Court judge has backed the minister's decision to build at Runkerry. Mr Attwood approved the plan to build the complex in February 2012. The development, on a 365-acre site, is to be known as Bushmills Dunes Golf Resort and Spa. The plan includes an 18-hole golf course, a five-star 120-bedroom hotel and 70 golf lodges. Last year, it was reported that the project could create up to 360 new jobs. However, the trust has argued that the minister should have consulted Unesco before making his decision as it could affect the Causeway's status as a world heritage site. During the judicial review hearing last month, a lawyer for the trust claimed the minister had been improperly advised. Among those who said the hotel should be built was golfer Darren Clarke. He said that he "didn't get how" the plans would damage the area when they were further away than a hotel and car park the Trust owns adjacent to the site. | bamboo2
