Could therefore, the closure of another 3-5 stores potentially save another £1-2m next year?

Definitely looking like breakeven is in sight.

"...9 non-contributing stores closed during the year. We plan to close a further 3-5 non-contributing stores during the current year."

" The majority of the improvement in the Group financial performance was from our Retail division which reduced operating losses by GBP3.8m over the year. This was driven out of our UK/Europe business, through enhanced margins particularly in the latter part of H2, lower underlying labour costs and the closure of 9 non-contributing stores"

Let's hope FCCN share price can do as well as FFY earlier this week.

Nice article in today`s Independent newspaper fashion section featuring FCCN

Style file: Black and white and cool all over

In the mood for monochrome? French Connection has it covered, with a capsule collection of on-trend pieces, writes Rebecca Gonsalves

French maids, magpies and Newcastle United FC supporters are all to be found sporting a black-and-white look. But don't let such associations deter you from experimenting with the most classic of high-contrast combinations. This season, French Connection has gone mad for monochrome with a capsule collection dedicated to black-and-white pieces.

Sporty shapes come with a hefty dose of street-ready attitude thanks to logos, exposed zips and body-con detailing. Masculine tailoring-inspired pieces may appeal more to fashion classicists, while lace detailing adds a feminine balance.

The campaign shot on model-of-the-moment Adwoa Aboah best demonstrates how to wear the collection – keeping things simple with minimal make-up and slicked-back hair allows the clean contrast of the two colours to really resonate. In practice, a swipe of bold lipstick (red is a classic for a reason) will really stand out against such a pared-back palette.

The return of the monochrome trend for spring/summer is hardly surprising; a black-and-white palette tends to reappear along with nautical stripes and floral prints on the catwalks every September. This season big proponents of the trend are Moschino, Jil Sander and Victoria Beckham, whose clean lines and masculine tailoring are referenced in the French Connection collection. So too is the sporty swagger of Alexander Wang's eponymous line, not least in the tongue-in-cheek proposition of a "French?" mesh intarsia logo T-shirt.

Black-and-white dressing does of course create all manner of concerns, not least how to do the washing without turning everything grey. But the beauty of this collection is that most of the pieces are separates that can be mixed and matched into your existing wardrobe with flying colours.

Investors gave a warm welcome to the latest retailer to make its stock market debut. Shares in Koovs , the Indian online fashion retailer, surged 34, or 22.7pc, to 184p on its first day of dealings on Aim, a jump that mirrored the 32.6pc surge in AO World shares when the white goods group started trading in late February.

Koovs is one of a number of retailers pursuing initial public offerings. Shares in Boohoo.com, another web clothing business, are due to make their debut on Friday, while discounter Poundland and Pets at Home are in the process of listing.

Fashion chain French Connection is set to post a sharp reduction in annual losses on Wednesday after reporting a better-than-expected Christmas sales performance thanks to turnaround efforts.

It confounded critics with the brighter update, having previously warned over results three times in two years.

The chain said last month that UK and European retail sales and profit margins were ahead of its expectations throughout December and January, while the wholesale order book was also strong.

It said the festive trading would help narrow pre-tax losses to around £4.7m for the year to January 31, down sharply from a £7.2m loss the previous year and lower than forecast in the market.

Freddie George, an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, said French Connection was helped by its decision to hold back on heavy pre-Christmas discounting.

He added: "The company has made steady progress in implementing its strategy unveiled in September 2012, which involved improving price competitiveness, strengthening the 'good' ranges and improving efficiency in stores."

French Connection has been leading an overhaul on a number of levels, selling off unprofitable shops and overhauling its management team while also improving its fashion ranges, stock control and in-store service.

It has started seeing shoppers warm towards its ranges following the appointment of a new design team, which made is mark with a well-received inaugural collection for the 2013 autumn season.

The company has 74 stores in the UK and Europe, as well as licensed and wholesale operations around the world, including Hong Kong and China.
