Consolidation the next destination for European airlines

A period of consolidation among European airlines similar to what has occurred in the US is to be both expected and welcomed.

European airlines are expected to follow their US cousins as economic issues bite

Speaking at a panel debate in World Routes 2017 in Barcelona focusing on Europe, Austrian Airlines senior director network management Alexandra Goldschmidt said the recent issues of both airberlin and Alitalia pointed to a wider truth.

She added: “Consolidation of European traffic has been expected for a long time. It has probably just started and will go on for a couple of years. We are still facing competition and we will do in the future and there’s nothing bad about it.”

Bmi regional chief commercial officer Jochen Schnadt said the European aviation industry tends to be 10 to 15 years behind the US industry which has gone through its own period of consolidation.

SunExpress head of network planning and scheduling Wilken Bellman agreed, adding: “There are now four big US carriers which are highly profitable and still growing.”

Flybe chief commercial officer Vincent Hodder argued consolidation could take a number of different forms, from joint ventures to franchising.

He added these could often be positive moves allowing both partners to benefit from one another’s strengths.

Expecting to see this jump 5-10% one day soon. Feels like someone offloading keeping it down at the moment. This often moves on low volume but it has been stuck here since the beginning of the month.

In for 10k. Like the chart, like the rumours of trading in line/ahead of guidance, and the Ryanair fiasco can only be a positive.

Southend airport offers free flights to stricken Ryanair passengers

Ryanair passengers facing cancelled flights at Stansted due to the airline’s crew rota chaos are being offered free travel from Southend airport.

A total of 100 tickets to Dublin, Glasgow and Manchester will be available on a first come, first served basis until Friday with travel available between October 29 and December 20.

They will apply on new domestic routes being started by Flybe franchise carrier Stobart Air – sister airline to the owner of Southend airport.

Glyn Jones, chief executive of airport parent company Stobart Aviation, said: “The free return tickets is a simple gesture, an invitation if you like, to try us instead of the airports hit by the Ryanair cancellations.

“Tens of thousands of people will have had their holiday plans disrupted and clearly feel they’ve been left in limbo not knowing if they are travelling or not, or can even be sure their inbound flight won’t be cancelled.”

I admire your optimism rental and toffeeman but I find it hard to share with this one! Hopefully the next set of figures will start to give some grounds for hope! And maybe the Ryanair debacle will help but they will need to recover their customer focus and are likely to offer special prices etc to do so. IMHO we are in for another tough year! Would love to be proved a sceptic!!

Average speeds on the M60 less than 15mph

If the region’s drivers wonder why it takes them so long to negotiate the edges of Manchester, new research could provide the answer.

Average peak-time speeds on the M60 have been recorded to be less than 15mph.

That’s according to a recent study by the Department of Transport (DfT) and Transport for the North (TftN).

The latest statistics show flying is soon to become the best way to travel south from the North West, claim aviation bosses.

From October 29, the capital’s “best airport”, London Southend is to start a new route from Manchester to London.

Research by the independent regulator, the Office of Rail and Road, reveals the rate of train passenger complaints rising by 7.5 per cent in the past year.

Punctuality and reliability of services were the most common problems.

Back on the roads, major delays on other motorways such as the M6 and M1 are the result of multiple problems including accidents, roadworks, bad weather and broken down vehicles.

Alternative travel by air is now proving increasingly popular.

More than 700,000 passengers flew from Manchester to London last year via two airports. But now a third airport London Southend is starting a new route from next month with Flybe and is predicted to offer the best travel experience.

London Southend was ranked by far the best London airport for the fifth year in a row, with a maximum five- star rating for staff friendliness in the most recent Which? airport passenger survey.

Glyn Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Stobart Aviation, owners of London Southend Airport says: “With so much potential aggravation travelling by road or rail, people are waking up to the idea that flying is no longer a daft option and is perhaps a better way to travel to the capital.”
