You can usually buy with about a 5p spread and given the share price trades around £7.80 that is a small %.

I expect some people have been top-slicing.

I have never understood why there is so little interest in this company and next to nothing said on BBs, TMF anyway. Am I right in thinking there is still quite a big spread on the s.p? How does one find out what the spread is if not buying or selling and no longer has a broker? That question is a dead give-away that I am an unsophisticated investor and in no way a trader!

This share is a favourite of John Lee who till this month wrote a monthly column on his P/F for the FT. He holds shares for the long term as well.

At least with the quiet threads you don't get the dips and spikes as day traders buy and sell. Thought we may have pushed on through the £8 range but the markets have stalled that for a while.

Indeed bb2 - a share like FSJ makes it a pleasure though :o))

Keep posting bouleversee. It's great to see there are actually one or two others out there who hold shares for longer than a few weeks or even months.

As someone who bought at l37p in '98 and 7lp in '99, I have no intention of top-slicing either, unless to give some to my grandchildren and take some profits that way. I still think they are a buy.

Further news flow for James Fisher Nuclear - note the roll-out to come across all of AGR's sites:

Extracts:

"Published Tue, Nov 13th 2012 Arc Machines Providing Essential Remote Welding At Nuclear Sites

One of the more significant design improvements in the UK's Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGR) - some built more than 30 years ago - was the inclusion of a re-heater system to re-energise exhaust steam from the high pressure turbines in order to drive intermediate or lower pressure turbines further down the line."

"Following a three-year development process, from concept to design and application testing, EDF Energy commissioned AMI to supply a bespoke Model 20 weld head with full remote deployment for use across it various AGR sites. The modified internal diameter (ID) weld head, with an M415 power supply completing the system, will be used in a repair scenario to stop leaking inlet/outlet tubes by plugging a damaged tube during a reactor shutdown or to repair an existing plug."

"The AMI weld head was integrated with a delivery vehicle developed, with James Fisher Nuclear Services, specifically for the project. The same vehicle is used for the abrasion cleaning of any oxidation from the header port prior to welding and has also been designed to accommodate the delivery of other technologies that may be required as non-destructive testing and examination (NDT and NDE) systems continue to evolve."

"With an anticipated working life of up to 20 years the M20 weld system will be deployed across the AGR sites at Hinkley Point B, Torness, Heysham and Hunterston B, to replace a welding system in operation since the reactors were first commissioned, and is expected to see out the rest of the stations' operational lives."

The Torygraph say Hold given FSJ's bright future, but those who've been holding since the 400p days should consider top-slicing:

As someone who's been holding since those 400p days, I have absolutely no intention of top-slicing and am holding for £10 at the very least, and maybe for some years from now if all goes well without any significant change. With further topping up if appropriate.

Nice little summary of the "buoyant" FSJ:

"
Overseas growth keeps James Fisher buoyant
14th November 2012
By James Graham - Deputy Editor, North West

MARINE services group James Fisher's focus on overseas markets has paid off with third quarter sales up 14% on last year.

The Barrow-in-Furness-based business began as a regional shipping firm in 1847 and now operates globally serving a range of sectors such as nuclear and oil and gas.

In an interim management statement covering July to November the group said: "The company's focus on Asia Pacific and other developing regions and its strategy to leverage UK marine service skills overseas has helped to deliver strong growth in the first nine months of 2012."

It added: "Overall James Fisher's strategy to focus on the faster growing regions of the world and to have limited exposure to North America and continental Europe is reflected in its strong trading performance. The company remains well positioned to deliver further growth and value for our shareholders."

It said its largest divisions, specialist technical and offshore oil, have continued to perform well and the group has invested in new equipment to support organic growth.

But the defence business, which handles jobs such as submarine rescue, saw a slower second half and, "will report a lower financial result in 2012", but this will be offset by growth in other areas.

"The group remains cash generative and combined with support from our banks is able to take advantage of suitable bolt-on acquisition opportunities as they arise," added the company."

Good article about FSJ's growing involvement in renewables:

"James Fisher Defence Brings Its Expertise to Marine Renewable Energy Engineering (UK)
Posted on Nov 8th, 2012

With its headquarters at Renfrew, on the River Clyde in Scotland, and offices in the United States, Australia and Singapore, James Fisher Defence is one of the most respected names in subsea engineering. Established for almost 30 years, the company is a world leader in submarine rescue services, being the operator of the national service in Singapore and Australia and having operated the UK Submarine Rescue Service for 25 years up to 2008.

The company is capable of taking on the most demanding of defence projects – working to the highest design and fabrication standards – and has been responsible for notable achievements such as the highly publicized 2005 rescue of the seven trapped submariners of the submersible vessel, Priz, in deep waters off the Russian Far East coast.

With the rapid expansion of the UK marine renewable energy market – and many prototype tidal stream and wave energy devices under evaluation, as well as production-scale offshore wind farms under development – the company is focusing on the needs of this new type of customer. Its impressive 1900 square metre workshops on the Clyde provide an excellent defence-quality engineering and fabrication environment, capable of building and servicing the most complex of subsea equipment.

An ideal resource for marine renewable energy developers, this facility includes a 100 cubic metre test tank where submersibles, turbines, dive equipment, and a wide range of sea-based power generation components and systems can be tested in complete safety prior to full scale prototype deployment.

"We are used to taking on some extremely challenging subsea engineering tasks for the world's navies," said Ben Sharples, Managing Director of James Fisher Defence. "We have an extremely well-equipped engineering resource here on the Clyde that is ideally located for those engaged in marine renewable projects in UK, Irish and near-continental European waters. Given our proven abilities in naval architecture, design, engineering, development testing, fabrication and subsea deployment – including the integration of high-integrity powertrains into pressure vessels through our numerous submersible design and manufacturing projects – it follows that we have the skills too that are crucial to the successful and safe delivery of many types of marine renewable energy projects."

An example of the projects already being carried out by James Fisher Defence for marine renewable energy customers is its work for Ocean Flow Energy on the company's Evopod™ semi-submerged, floating, tethered tidal energy capture device. James Fisher Defence has been contracted to assemble the power train for the quarter-scale, 37 kW prototype of the device to be installed in the waters of Sanda Sound, South Kintyre, where it will be connected to the 11 kV grid in a multi-year evaluation.

"Whilst this represents a new market for us, it's one in which we are right at home," concludes Sharples. "We have the skills, expertise and resources, and we are in an ideal location to provide an excellent engineering support service focused on delivering the functionality that customers require, reliably and in complete safety."""

I was reading a supplement with the Times yesterday about renewable enrgy in the Humber region, one of FSJ's prime areas of operation:

- £530m being invested in port facilities
- Humber Gateway offshore wind farm underway with £750m investment from Eon
- best access to all three of the UK's largest planned offshore wind farms
- port side development sites are the largest in the UK
- in September just gone three wind farms opened in UK waters with £2 billion investment

It all bodes rather well for FSJ and its Fendercare and Strainstall operations etc.
