Numis: scope for growth at Electrocomponents

Numis is expecting electronic parts distributor Electrocomponents (ECM) to deliver ‘materially larger’ earnings in the medium term.

Analyst Julian Cater retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 945p on the shares, which fell 1.4% to 626.6p yesterday.

He said the group delivered a ‘resilient first quarter performance’ with sales growth of 4%, ‘which we attribute predominantly to market share gains in a more challenging economic environment’.

‘We continue to believe that the strategic initiatives and operational improvements management is pursuing will establish a materially larger earnings platform in the medium-term,’ he said.

Investors Chronicle:

'Electrocomponents buys in margin uplift'

Electrocomponents (ECM), as its name suggests, should be a distributor whose performance is intertwined with aggregate demand within the economy. But if, as some economists believe, we are already on the down-leg of the cycle, then it certainly is not apparent in full-year figures that show like-for-like revenue growth of 8.3 per cent and a 110 basis point rise in the adjusted operating margin.

IC View
A decent showing, but it remains to be seen whether a reported slowdown in like-for-like revenue growth in the first seven weeks of its financial year heralds a definitive trend. For now, we think the market is up to speed. Hold.

Broker Numis estimated that sales per day growth in the first seven weeks of the new trading year has averaged around 5% and accordingly had left its headline P&L forecasts unchanged.

"Management has guided to a higher level of capex in FY20-21 to raise the capacity of the US and German distribution centres, increase the scalability of the technology platform and introduce greater automation. Crucially, it anticipates a mid-20s ROCE from these investments in the medium-term."
