The Industrial Distribution sub-set of our coverage universe includes seven stocks: Bunzl,DCC, Diploma, DiscoverIE, Electrocomponents, Essentra and Ferguson. In this note, we introduce a less aggressive view of the sustainability and robustness of economic prospects.

We expect share price risk to remain exaggerated as the market continues to be trigger happy to first circumstantial evidence of cyclical risks. With valuations already high across the space, this leaves little room for any execution mishaps and limited scope for material re-rating but plenty for material de-rating.

We downgrade to Hold on Bunzl, DCC, DiscoverIE, Electrocomponents, Essentra and Ferguson and retain our Hold on Diploma.

More to go at Electrocomponents, says Liberum

Electronic parts distributor Electrocomponents (ECM) has outperformed in a weak environment and Liberum says there is scope for market, and share price, gains.


Analyst Sanjay Vidyarthi retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 810p on the stock after a strong fourth quarter update.

‘Management has plenty of levers to pull across sales, gross margin, and costs,’ he said. ‘We expect continued market share gains across regions and scope for margin expansion.

‘While the rating has seen some recovery this year, we think that there is more to go for in the context of [the] strong update.’

The shares gained 13.4p or 2.2% to 610p. They have risen 20% this year.

Will Electrocomponents short-circuit following Thursday’s trading update?

Though February’s update was solid it did mark a slowdown from the company’s first half performance. In both Q1 and Q2 Electrocomponents posted like-for-like growth of 10%; in comparison, for the 4 months to January 31st covered in its most recent statement, its comparable sales came in at 6%.

As for Thursday’s trading update, investors will want to hear that is set to deliver the 10% rise in full year revenue to £1.88 billion, and 16% surge in adjusted pre-tax profit to £210.2 million forecasts by analysts. If they are to do so, then a further like-for-like slowdown in the rest of H2 needs to have been avoided.
