No, he doesn’t, in my opinion.

He comes across as a decent person and appears to be a reasonable man-manager.
But he is lacking in the ability to be a tactical coach, particularly at international level.

He talks a good game and will never do or say anything to upset the Establishment. So it appears that we’re stuck with him for the foreseeable. We might have the occasional decent run in a tournament but if we really want to actually win something then it’s going to need a better and less cautious footballing brain to get the very best out of this group of “talented̶1; players.

Rashford's penalty was decent, imho - beat the goalkeeper by keeping eyes on him and placing the ball the opposite side. Executed it wrongly - by just not looking at all where the ball was. A bit more care.

But a far method than the last two that were too high and too saveable by the keeper - amateur penalties.

But those are details - should not be relying on penalties.

The standard of penalty taking in the tournament and generally is absolutely dire. Players seem to prefer to look cool, with their stupid stuttery run ups, scoring 4 times out of 10, than scoring 9 times out of 10, with a proper technique. Well, they think they look cool, Rashford's penalty was particularly ridiculous.

Taking players off the bench to take penalties that in a final is plainly stupid.
They no feel for the ball.
Just dropped into the biggest moment of theirs lives.
It's a really bad idea.
And he did it with two players.

They're brave lads having a go and it's not their fault. Imo Southgate got it wrong big time and should turn down the knighthood.

Agree possession is key. you want players on the pitch that can play with possession. In England's case these players were on the bench(Grealish, sancho) most of this tournament and paid price eventually against a better technical team such as Italy.

Instead of seizing the momentum and going for at least one other goal.

Bringing on Henderson for Rice, who one of the few players willing to run with the ball at the opposition.

Leaving the introduction of other, more attacking substitutes too late while we just invited the Italians on to us as we defended desperately.

These are just some examples of Southgate’s lack of tactical nous and over-cautious approach to games.

We have absolutely no chance of winning the World Cup next year.
