Yes, ideally CFO is a qualified accountant. However, if he/she has a strong team of qualified acc.. and that he can see the overall picture of the accounts. I have worked with big as well as small companies and with Financial Analysts, some of them are very smart - their title is "analyst" but they have eyes for details!. Anyway hope this guy lives up to his reputation.

My brother in law reports to the finance director at a building company. His reply below :

I see nothing wrong with the appointment. The man who does the actual accounts is probably going to be qualified. The accounts are then scrutinised by auditors who will ensure that they comply with current legislation and make suggestions where they don’t. Really the CFO job is more one of networking, talking to bankers and insurers to make sure funds are available. Typically accountants are the ones with the relevant experience and so they are the ones in the job but this guy looks to have plenty of experience having worked at Goldman Sachs etc.

I am a qualified accountant and totally agree with Valhamos. A strong qualified accountant will have many strings to their bow. The qualification is not purely tax or audit focused....

99% of serious listed entities have qualified accountants as their CFO (number 2) in the organisation alongside the CEO.

An analyst would not generally have treasury, tax, risk/controls or commercial finance expertise or experience...

How many listed companies have financial analysts rather than accountants as their CFO? Not many I suspect.

I disagree. Having a CFA is probably a better option for the company as an accountants job is to purely make sure the numbers match up whereas for a company with a decent financial position, a CFA can help by providing their expertise in a broad range of fields. Accountancy/Audit only accounts for 3% of a CFA's expertise

Not appointing a qualified accountant as CFO or even someone with accounting experience seems very odd. Not happy with this as I see this as an increase in risk in continuing to hold DOTD.

Two points:
- The next trading update will be released in mid-Jan, as per last year.
- GDPR compliance will have zero impact on dotDigital revenues. Email campaigns are one of the pillars of every successful digital marketing/sales campaign and have been since the dawn of ecommerce. GDPR will not change this. It’s a legal compliance/configuration/user experience issue for their customers to address on their sites/apps. The real problem is if companies change way the email opt-in option appears on their site/app so that it is no longer clear to the user which option to select to receive emails. This sounds trivial, but this can lead to a big drop-off in new email subscribers and affect their bottom line in the future. It takes years for a brand to build a large organic mailing list (ie where users subscribe voluntarily) and anything which interrupts this process is a major issue. Some companies are approaching this by releasing and testing their GDPR-compliant opt-ins on their site/app in Jan, well before the May deadline, and monitoring any drop-off in new subscribers with analytics.

Global brands are taking this very seriously. Man Utd recently displayed instructions on how to continue receiving emails on the digital advertising boards at the last home game against Southampton and have a video with instructions on their site. Dotmailer have also been running workshops on GDPR compliance.

from the most recent annual report p16
'Preparation for upcoming regulatory alterations, including
the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), through
process change, platform innovation and audits of both
data and processes.'

also mentioned in the year end company presentation document p18

As I understand it, GDPR focuses on customer personal data and how companies and organisations store and process it. Customer names and email addresses are hardly the most sensitive of data out there. Organisations sending emails will probably have to ensure that customers are able to request removal of themselves from email lists and subsequent removal of the email address from the sending company database.

That should exist today in most cases I would hope. Think of the Unsubscribe option on most emails you receive today. So, DOTD shouldn't be directly affected and I doubt their customers will be greatly impacted either but I'm always ready to be proved wrong.

As a new watcher, and reading recent posts here, I'd be interested to know what existing holders make of the potential impact on DOTD revenues of GDPR - due to come into force in May 2018? My concern is that these draconian regulations will reverse the growing trend in mailing as a key marketing tool in the UK and Europe, whether on a short-term or long-term basis.

Yes, agreed. The 3.84p is y/e 6/19 so I was getting a bit ahead of myself.

We should get the six month trading update in a few weeks which should hopefully make good reading.
