A good measure for Dignity share holders is ask for performance history of each business they have purchased over say 10 years . Most tightly run family funeral companies can expect to as (near as damn it) do similar numbers year on year for example if your old established funeral business does 300 per annum then that’s quite predictable to expect similar next year and so on . The measure of how well Dignity is how they hold the numbers at each newly acquired business , I think it would make very interesting reading .

I think Dignity are too thinly spread . They should make a plan to reduce say 200 branches to 600 , sell off to highest bidder ( there would be lots of private interest ) they know the weakest offices to sell . The cash could be used to reduce debt and solve a lot of staff problems by transferring them . The remaining branches would stand a price increase of modest but useful level , whilst funerals are price sensitive to a degree it’s not so much when the overall service is performed with detail care and compassion ( as in the privately owned funeral service providers ) this is more difficult on Dignity scale with processes and controls taking away the quick immediate decisions a private owner can make face to face with families . Direct cremation is not as massive as made out , whilst recognising it is here and here to stay all funeral directors can offer the same it’s not the end of the world . They should stand back and take a practical look , they can fix this but sacrifices need to be made , the crematoria are “ golden “ but as the most of the top ten most expensive crematoria in the UK are owned by Dignity a “ surcharge “ for gas may send families to other newer options that seem to be popping up all over the UK .

Death rate slightly below 2021 for the second week. We are also approaching the anniversary of the price reset.
