19/11/2002 00:17 | Looking at a rise this afternoon.... 11/18 06:58 U.S. Stocks Rise in Europe, Led by Bristol-Myers, H-P, Home Depot and GE By John Fraher Frankfurt, Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rose in Europe on optimism a report this week on housing starts and earnings at companies such as Home Depot Inc., Lowe's Cos., and Hewlett- Packard Co. will show consumers are sustaining the economy. Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. gained after the drugmaker said the Food and Drug Administration approved its Abilify schizophrenia treatment. UAL Corp., owner of United Airlines, jumped after saying it will cut jobs and reduce its plane fleet to help avoid bankruptcy. Standard & Poor's 500 Index futures climbed 5.10 to 914.00 as of 12:55 p.m. Frankfurt time. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures added 51 to 8617, and Nasdaq-100 futures rose 5 to 1070.50. The S&P 500 has rallied 17 percent since falling to a five-year low last month. ``It looks like the consumer is hanging in there,'' said Alex Ingham, who manages about $2 billion as head of North American equities at Aberdeen Asset Management Plc in London. ``There are not too many obstacles to extending this rally.'' The S&P 500 advanced for the fifth week in six last week as reports pointed to rising retail sales, better-than-expected consumer sentiment and declining initial jobless claims. The index may rise 5.5 percent by the end of the year, Ingham said. He is buying telecommunications stocks including SBC Communications Inc., the second-biggest U.S. local-phone company. Housing Starts The level of home construction in October stayed above this year's average as builders worked to keep pace with record demand, economists said before a report due Wednesday. Home Depot today added 12 cents to $28.44 in Germany. The world's largest home-improvement chain is scheduled to report earnings tomorrow. Smaller rival Lowe's, which reports today, wasn't trading in Germany. Hewlett-Packard rose 29 cents to $17.19 in Germany. The second-biggest computer maker reports on Wednesday. AOL Time Warner Inc., the largest media company, advanced 16 cents to $15.58. Toys ``R'' Us Inc. and Medtronic Inc. are also scheduled to post results today. Bristol-Myers gained 66 cents to $24.71 in Germany. The drugmaker's Abilify treatment may have more than $700 million in yearly sales, analysts have said. It's among the most important new products for Bristol-Myers, which has had a series of regulatory and development setbacks with heart and cancer medicines. UAL jumped 23 cents to $3.18 in Germany. The company said it will cut 9,000 jobs and remove planes from its fleet to help secure a federal loan guarantee and avoid bankruptcy. Phones Microsoft Corp. added 20 cents to $56.89 in Germany. The world's biggest software company made profit margins of 85 percent on sales of its Windows operating system last quarter, as other units had losses, the Financial Times said, citing a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Qwest Communications International Inc. dropped 16 cents to $3.63 in Germany. The largest local-telephone company in 14 western U.S. states found more accounting errors that will force it to restate profit by a further $358 million and delay its next quarterly report, the Wall Street Journal said, citing a company regulatory filing. AT&T Wireless Services Inc. gained 16 cents to $7.56 in German. The company is worth buying because the shares are poised to rise, said Bernard Schaeffer, chief executive of Schaeffer's Investment Research, on ``Wall Street Week With Fortune.'' Evian Water Groupe Danone SA rose 2.7 euros to 133.70 euros in France. The world's largest yogurt maker and the bottler of Evian water may be a takeover target as its sales are expected to rise in the coming years, Barron's reported. Danone American depositary receipts, each representing one-fifth of an ordinary share, on Friday closed at $26.51. Tenet Healthcare Corp. added 20 cents to $16.53 in Germany. The hospital operator is among stocks favored by Charles Jobson, a portfolio manager at the hedge fund Delta Partners LLC, Barron's reported. Reliant Resources Inc., whose shares weren't trading in Germany, said it may consider bankruptcy if the energy trading company can't restructure billions of dollars in debt, the Houston Chronicle reported, citing regulatory filings. Trust Co. of New Jersey may drop when U.S. trading starts. The operator of banks in the northern and central parts of New Jersey said it will restate earnings for the past seven quarters because of bookkeeping errors. The restatement will reduce net income by $3.1 million. Trust Co. shares don't trade in Europe. | ![]() blockbuy | |
