U.S. Stock-Index Futures Gain as Confidence Seen Rising; Gap Shares Climb
By Scarlet Fu

New York, Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- December futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose before exchanges opened on optimism a survey will show consumer confidence this month rebounded from a nine-year low.

Gap Inc. rose after reporting its first quarterly profit increase in more than two years, while Household International Inc. climbed for a second day.

``The mood in the market is not bad,'' said Thomas Meier, who helps manage 1.5 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in U.S. assets at Union Investment in Frankfurt and recently bought Home Depot Inc. shares. ``If we see positive data on the consumer, then that can only help. The health of the economy depends on the consumer.''

S&P 500 futures rose 2.50 to 905.00 as of 8:09 a.m. New York time, suggesting the index will be little changed when trading resumes at 9:30 a.m. Dow futures added 2.00 to 904.50.

Nasdaq-100 Index futures were unchanged at 1051.50. Intel Corp. declined after Merrill Lynch & Co. cut its rating on semiconductor makers. Dell Computer Corp., which yesterday said industry demand probably won't rise this quarter, dropped.

For the week, the S&P 500 has risen 1.1 percent. The benchmark is headed toward its fifth gain in six weeks. Yesterday, the index recorded its biggest one-day advance in almost a month after HSBC Holdings Plc's purchase of Household lifted financial shares. Since its five-year low on Oct. 9, the S&P 500 has rallied 16 percent.

The Dow has gain 0.1 percent this week and the Nasdaq 3.8 percent.

The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index will probably show an increase to 82 in November from 80.6 in October, as benchmark stock indexes rose from five-year lows, according to economists. The report is scheduled for release at about 9:50 a.m. New York time.

Gap Rises

Gap advanced 35 cents to $14.25 on Instinet. The largest U.S. clothing retailer had a third-quarter net income of $135.3 million or 15 cents a share, thanks to demand for items including denim jackets and sweaters. Analysts expected 14 cents a share.

Household climbed for a second day. The stock yesterday surged 22 percent after HSBC Holdings Plc agreed to purchase the second-largest U.S. consumer finance company.

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, slumped 71 cents to $18.50 on Instinet. Merrill Lynch & Co. said semiconductor stocks rallied on expectations for a year-end recovery that may not happen. Merrill lowered its rating to ``sell'' from ``neutral.''

The shares change hands for 39.5 times the profit analysts expect Intel to earn in the next 12 months. The average for companies in the S&P 500 is 18 times.

``Intel's stock is not cheap,'' said Andrew Griffin and other Merrill Lynch analysts in a note to investors.

Analog Devices, PMC-Sierra

Analog Devices Inc. and PMC-Sierra Inc. also declined after Merrill Lynch cut their ratings to ``sell'' from ``neutral.''

Analog Devices, a maker of high-speed communications chips, slipped 51 cents to $28.95 on Instinet. PMC-Sierra, which also makes semiconductors used in telecommunications gear, declined 27 cents to $5.70 on Instinet.

Dell declined 89 cents to $30.05 on Instinet. The personal- computer maker posted third-quarter profit of 21 cents a share and forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 23 cents a share. Both figures were in line with forecasts.

``We're not counting on a broad industry recovery for our growth in the near term,'' Chief Executive Michael Dell said in a Bloomberg TV interview after the company released third-quarter results. ``We see a continuation of a similar trend going into the fourth quarter.''

General Electric Downgrade

General Electric Co. fell 80 cents to $23.70 on Instinet. Donald Macdougall, a J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. analyst, cut the world's biggest maker of power-generation equipment to ``underweight'' from ``neutral,'' citing concern about the profit- growth outlook.

Wind River Systems Inc. shed 14.7 cents to $4.68 on Instinet. The software maker said it expects a fourth-quarter loss of 10 cents to 15 cents a share, excluding costs. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call forecast an average loss of 9 cents on that basis.

BEA Systems Inc. rose 31 cents to $9.35 on Instinet. The Internet-commerce software maker's third-quarter profit was 7 cents a share, excluding costs. Analysts polled by First Call had forecast 6 cents.

Edison Schools Inc. advanced 12 cents to $1.22 in Germany. The private manager of schools said it received inquiries about being taken private and has provided financial information to one interested party.
